Hi folks, the coaches I have bought second hand have the wheels full of gunk, can scrape this away, but are very dark. Is there a 'clean' way to get them back to how they were? Dremel with copper brush, ultrasonic bath in ammonia solution, other?
I've ordered new 7198 shoes but pushing the coaches on the tracks the lights flicker. Also ordered new warm light LED to replace the bulbs 😊
Thank you
Marco

Drugstore alcohol and a cotton swab or toothpick.

I recommend the Hag Old Generation Slider (518). I installed this on my SBB lightsteel consist to power the taillight and I love the way it clips onto the bogie and is much better designed than the original Maerklin 7075 which had to be screwed to the bogie.

Hag: https://www.amiba-shop.c...gen-der-alten-Generation

Maerklin: https://marnan.eu/artike...or-oudere-rijtuigen.html

As far as cleaning, any isopropyl (rubbing) alcohol will do.

Regards

Lighter fuel & cotton buds. Maybe the odd scalpel blade. That's what I use on Z gauge.

Thank you all. I have to buy a new tin of Zippo fluid so I'll go down this road 😊👍🏻

Any cleaning with a knife, brass brushes or the like damages the surface of the wheel and leaves grooves in which dirt collects even more easily!

Dirt layers can be thick and hard, it is best to leave the wheels in a covered container with alcohol all day to soften
UserPostedImage
How often is it enough to wipe the wheels well with a cloth

In more difficult cases, I make small circles with a sanding sponge that removes hard layers on a drill (Dremel and similar) and finally repeat the process with a cloth

Rather surprisingly Tesco sell lighter fluid at the cigarette counter (well maybe not that surprising!)
