Fellow Märklin Enthusiasts,

Now that my layout is near completion. I’m ready to start collecting Märklin steam engines and I would like to find out which ones are essential! If you’re reading this and you have Märklin steam engines please help me in selecting them as I have no clue what to buy. Than you!

Hi,

I guess this is very personal and depends on your childhood dreams. To me it’s the BR24, BR23 and BR44/BR50. I keep them on the best place in the display.

I find the Br24 (historically 3003, but these days the 3624x series are much nicer) with a string of thunderbox coaches always look great, ideal for branch line passenger, freight or mixed traffic. I have always found the br24 to be a pretty loco to look at. There is also the Br64 tank loco version.

As others have already said the Br42/44/50/52 series locos are must haves, especially for freight, but also for mixed or commuter traffic.

I would also add a Br85, essentially a Br52 series as a tank loco, and as such always looks a brute.

For fast passenger traffic Br01/02/03. For commuter traffic a Br23 with 'silver coins' coaches.

I suppose we are talking DB, era III ¿?

Anyway, the most common and general workhorse of them all, I think is the BR50.
There were many thousands built. Also many simplified versions (BR52) were built for the war, and those that survived were refitted after the war.
The 50 can be used for both passenger and freight.
I especially like the one with a "cabinentender" for freights.
Then, you would probably like an express passenger lok. Like the BR03 or even BR01.
Thirdly, you might need a BR44 (BR43) for heavy freight. Many thousands were built of this machine too.
If you run shorter commuter trains, you should probably get a BR78.
For your yard, you could go for a BR86 with a Telex coupling.

Some ppl has mentioned the BR24. It´s definetly nice and common, but I just feel kind of bored with it...
Then there is the "bread-and-butter" BR38. Should not be missing in any collection, as so many were built in real life.
Personally I like the versatility of the BR41, which -both in real life as in model, situates in the middle between a BR03 and a BR50.

If you want more modern steamers, there are the BR23 and BR10, which were among the last steamers produced for the DB.

You might also want something more exotic (Only very few numbers produced);
BR42.90 (Franco Crosti boiler)
BR45 (biggest freight steamer ever built)
BR53 (biggest freight steamer NOT built)
BR05 (biggest passenger lok built. Both "naked", cab-forward and aerodynamic streamlining)

Here is my list of steam locomotives to collect

BR01, BR03, BR05, BR10, BR24, BR23, BR38, BR44, BR45, BR50, BR78, BR86. Twelve Märklin steam locomotives suggested and now the quest in finding them!

With the support from the members of the Märklin-users.net let the search begin!

A bit more obscure but no mention of BR65? One of my favourites.

I have an ancient F*****mann version but see that Marklin have now brought out their 'new' version.

BR01/BR02/BR03

3 passenger4
BR24
BR38
BR78

2 freight
BR43/BR44/BR50
BR94

I like the mix of old Prusians + Einheitslokomotiven

Eventually despite the small numbers in the prototype I may acquire eventually the new construction BR23 and BR65. As well as the Bayern S3/6.

It is in German, but you can translate it to English via mouse right click and translate the page to English.
