Hello all,
I recently got a Brawa Bavarian Railways G4/5 freight loco (Item # 40127). About 160 bucks. I couldn't resist. However, there's an issue. I run analog, and at a constant transformer setting, the loco runs at an inconsistent speed regardless of transformer voltage. My first thought was that something is binding with every wheel revolution, but I haven't been able to find anything. I've also oiled all moving parts besides the motor and have tried running it in for an extended period, but nothing helps. Track current is fine; all of my other engines run pretty consistently, including Marklin's new Albatross (beautiful engine, BTW).

This engine is, like a lot of Brawa stuff, hyper-detailed down to representation of the inside running gear (the prototype was a 4 cylinder). Maybe therein lies the problem. If anyone has any experience or ideas, I'd love to get feedback. Thanks,
Norbert

Have you looked at the drive rods? I had a similar problem with a steam engine and found that 1 of the wheels had slipped on the left side of the engine and caused the drive rod on that side to be out of quarter and was binding. It took me a while to figure it out. I took the shell of the engine and removed the motor so I could move the wheels very carefully and that’s when I noticed the binding.

I agree with Robert.

If you can disconnect the motor you can easily determine if the drive mechanism is turning freely. When I have had binding in a steamer's drivetrain it has been caused by the two sides of the engine getting out of quarter, due to a drive wheel which has slipped on the axle.
Regards,
Jim

I have almost all Märklin and mostly HO, although I do have a small number of Z gauge trains!
So many trains and so little time.

Robert, I did notice that 2 components on the valve gear that shouldn't have been in contact were rubbing against each other, so I was able to bend one ever so slightly to provide clearance. This helped somewhat but didn't solve the problem, so the next step will be disassembly to see what else may be binding. Wish me luck. The instructions are clear as mud in both English and German with the exploded drawing being of no use. Maybe I'll just live with it for now. Anyway, thanks for the reply guys.
