Hello,

I am not so long time in this hobby, however I did my homework and I already own a fair C track layout on my table.
I am now on plans for a more extended layout and I am counting the extra parts I will need. I will add some 74491 motors on my turnouts.
What I am asking is if there is a problem when the locomotive gets in one of the two outputs of turnout while the key is on the other side and gets out from the one end.
I can see that there is a spring mechanism that allow the locomotive to pass from the dual side to one end, but is this a strain for the turnout?
I am asking this since I can avoid some turnout motors in some points.
Hope that I didnt confused you and thank you very mcuh for your time.

Hi,

No problem! I have been using unmotorized C-switches like you describe for years without problem.

Best regards, Peder

Hi

None of my C-track turnouts on the exit from my schattenbahnhof ladder are motorised. I set them in the straight-ahead position and let the passing train move the spring-loaded blades. I've never had a derailment nor any problems with the turnouts after three years of use.

The only potential problem which I have seen is if you have a consist that is part way through a switch and for some reason you need to reverse it. The part past the switch will try to go straight while the part not through will continue on the curved rail.
