I wonder if box cars with ladder to the top (typical era 1-2 I think) were used after the lines were electrified?

In case the line had such cars, would they just prohibit the ladder's use, remove the ladder or just not use those cars on those lines?

I didn't find any Märklin example, but I am sure there are - however, here are two other examples:

Cars like this 46331 Swiss hopper still have a ladder: https://img.ricardostati...x1350/pl/1190099776/0/1/
So does this Piko Tank car: https://az95169.vo.msecn...es/piko/large/L54795.jpg

I am sure that there are other car types which still have such features, where hatches or other equipment must be accessed from the top for loading/discharge.

Thanks, mike c!

I found a coincidental Märklin full line catalogue.

The 2015/2016 catalogue, page 150, the 43320 passenger car set (https://www.maerklin.de/en/products/details/article/43320), all the cars have ladders. It's better seen at https://www.modellbahn-rhein-main.de/produkt/knm091-maerklin-43320-h0-ac-personenwagen-set-der-k-bay-sts-b-3tlg-mhi-ovp/?lang=en

The example train set is with the electric locomotive 37069 (https://www.maerklin.de/en/products/details/article/37069) as an MHI/Exclusive offer.

As also well described in the previous url, this train ran on the Salzburg-Freilassing-Berchtesgaden April-August 1914. This route was electrified then: https://second.wiki/wiki/bayerische_eg_2

Which means, they did run cars with ladders even if they were utmost danger of death to climb and risk hitting the catenary wires.

Which probably means the two examples I showed in the first comment probably also were allowed to run on that line? I'd be interested in any comments!

These coaches and the ones in your first post in this thread would only have had the roof accessed while in a service facility siding, to allow someone to go and refill/replace the lanterns that provided lighting. I doubt that such sidings would have had catenary, as the locos shunting them would be more likely to be steam or diesel.

In the case of the electric loco you pictured, it shows it hauling freight, and it is described as a freight loco, but even so, in the shunting yards they would more likely have non-electric locos shunting any rolling stock.

The tanker and hopper wagons linked in another post would also likely have personnel climbing the ladders only in loading/unloading facilities, again most likely devoid of catenary. To load the hopper wagon it needs to run under a shute where catenary would soon be damaged by whatever product is being loaded, and someone would only need to climb the ladder to check the load while such operations were in progress. Similarly with the tanker, fuel depots would not have catenary due to the risk of electrical sparks igniting fumes. Even of the load is non-flammable, such facilities tend to be devoid of catenary for practical operational reasons.

Thank you, @kiwiAlan! I learn every day!

Very very much aside: I see you are from Didcot. Interesting to see that the UK has both a third rail system and an overhead system - with several main routes not being electrified. I made a "poster hack" of the beautiful and charming "Im taking an early holiday cos i know summer comes soonest in the south" poster with a King Arthur steam engine - and replaced it with the Swiss Crocodile. I discovered the third rail in the old poster, and had to draw catenary wires for it. So it shows an impossible scene! (It's at My “Im taking an early holiday cos i know summer comes soonest in the south” note (Disclaimer: I have no income or ads in my notes. It's purely a hobby. Plus this poster is freely downloadable.))
