I went to power up my CS3 today and there was a momentary flash of light and then nothing. It won't power up. I unplugged the adapter power pack 60065 from both ends of the power supply, plugged it in several times, but still nothing. Is it possible the 60065 is kaput? I hope so since I don't want to deal with having to fix the CS3. Much easier and probably cheaper to just get the new 60045. Any help appreciated.

Did you get a feel for where the flash of light came from? If it was the power supply that lit up then just get another one.

May sound silly but did you check the outlet? Assuming that's OK you can check the output of the PS if you've got a VOM. I hope for your sake it's one of those two!

Did you smell some burns from the CS3?
If not then it is power supply fault.
Check if there is 19 VDC by plug the power supply to the wall socket.
It´s easy way by check 19 VDC with a lamp at 14-16 Volt.

Possibly, they are known to fail - https://www.marklin-user...ing-a-60061-Power-Supply

Do the checks that others have suggested and check that the pins in the 4 pin plug haven't been pushed in (see my thread above).

The flash of light was on the CS3 screen. There is no "light" associated with the power supply.

I should clarify. The flash of light was on the CS3 screen. This happens when it is trying to power up. A momentary flash of light on the screen and then a blank screen.

I'm not sure Goofy is correct. The power supply is more likely to be the failed device.

Have you had a chance to attempt to measure the output voltage from it? I would certainly do this as a first hit at diagnosis.

Don't have a voltage meter. If I were to get one how does that work with a 4 pin connector?

Check by connect the power supply if there is power output.
If there is power, then your CS3 are fault.

How can I connect the power supply to anything else when it has a 4 pin connector? I don't understand this. I can't plug a light into it if that is what you mean.

They can fail, I had one failing after 5 years of use.

Here is what I would do:

1. First check your wall power socket and that you actually have power.

2. Buy a cheap voltage meter.

3. Plug in the power pack

4. Use a bit of blutac to keep the 4 pin connector securely to a flat surface. This will help you when doing the measurements.

5. Put the voltage meter to 0-24VDC or similar.

6. 2 of the 4 pins are the + and -. Yo7 can try and google to find some photos but else just try measure all the combinations using the small probes from the voltage meter.

7. Be careful not to create short cuts while measuring the pins by e.g. touching 2 pins at the same time with the same probe.

Let us know how it goes. Most likely yoy4 issue relates to power pack failure.

Best Regards

Thank you for this very useful information. I am thinking a new power pack. Time to buy a voltage meter. Hoping it is the power pack and not the CS3. I have been leaving it plugged into the CS3 that is powered off, but based on other posts (and lack of experience), I should be disconnecting it from power socket after each use. I did find a schematic of the connectors with polarity listed.

Now, if only the hardware store were open on Sunday, I could have fixed this thing before the big game! KC or Bucs? Don't matter to me!

IIRC the label on the bottom shows the pins that have the voltage on them. The same picture is in the manual.

Hi Barry

Anything is possible:
  • your 60065 is dead
  • your CS3 encounters status that prevents of full start to take place

My (limited) experience with 2 CS2 and one CS3 , with 2 x 60061 (60W 230 VAC), 1 60101 (100W 230 VAC):
  • 60061 (or in your case 60065) are pretty reliable. I thought one of mine was dead so I bought another one but to discover later that one of the wires in the connector (CS2 side) was broken.
  • My 60101 is quite slow to re-trigger (when the PSU shuts itself I must wait without mains for over 30 s before the unit accepts to restart
  • My CS3 (60226), when starting produces a flash on the screen just like what you describe, 10 s after applying power, then the screen remains dark but operation starts with 50 s (much faster than the CS2)
  • It is highly probable that the full power up (CS3 screen is turned on) happens only after a number of checks are passed. Just my assumption

So -alas- I believe there is something in the way of a full start on your CS3 (Memory check-sum, port readiness, ...)

Have you tried to make a screen display from your computer (Ethernet connection PC-CS3) using your screen browser and the CS3 address you selected (Mine is 192.168.0.23)?
Have you tried to connect a USB keyboard and type characters during the boot-up period?
Just my 2 cents
Jean

Got my new 60045 power pack. CS3 fired right up, thankfully. Thanks to all who replied.
