Does anyone know where I can find a replacement motor, Märklin part no. 33227, for a 5506 Köf? It is shown as no longer available on the Märklin website. An alternative DC motor that will fit would be acceptable as I've replaced the original decoder with an ESU LokPilot 5L.

Edited to correct model number.

Cool

I think your KöF is a 5506, since a 5507 is a BR78.

I can only find a sparepart motor from SB-Modellbau, the motor is a fantastic Faulhaber motor;
but the price will give you a heart attack.......... BigGrin

And the you have to modify the chassis a little:

You can save a little by ordering it from Rainer Hermann at Spur-1-Werkstat:

Do you still have the motor and most important, the worm gears?

Then "any" motor with 2 axles would do, it could even be a bit smaller, as long as the length is the same.

Cool

Thanks Per - I've corrected the model number to 5506. I the motor still works (mostly). The problem is intermittent. It will suddenly start screeching very loudly and slowly come to a stop. If I tap on it the motor will return to normal.

And you're right - the cost is a shocker! I bought this set second-hand and only paid about twice what is being asked for the replacement motor!

Dear Phil
Have you oiled the motor and running gear. It sounds like dry bearings to me.

Hi Bryan,

I've had the loco apart to inspect/clean and oil things prior to installing the new decoder. This came from an owner in SE Asia and there is some zinc corrosion. Hopefully not the dreaded zinc pest! It has not really been run by me except a bit on a rolling road. I was hoping to run it around the garden but the weather (read snow) is not cooperating! I may need to put a bit more oil on the motor bearings and run it some more on the rolling road. I didn't want to overdo it (the oil) initially.

One totally unrelated observation. The rear lights on this loco are wired in series for some bizarre reason. Your guess is as good as mine why they did this. The wire pair for the rear lights go to a circuit board that could have just as easily been designed to feed the lights in parallel. A real pain if one goes out as they all go out. A VOM is needed to find the dead bulb. Otherwise, a bunch of trial and error. The front lights are all individually wired.

Dear Phil
With loco repairs it is always a process of testing sub assemblies and pinpoint what is wrong. If the motor can be taken out then this would be my first step. With the motor out of the chassis with leads disconnected, try the unit on a 12v dc power supply. With the motor out also test the free movement of the gear chain. If the loco has dry bearing noise this should point to where the problem is.

I had it on a rolling road for a over an hour in both forward and reverse. It is very quiet running. The loud screeching did not re-occur.
