I always wanted to have a streetcar run back and forth on the streets of my town. I have found some nice ROCO models but they are only 2 rail DC - are there any I could run on three-rail? Or should I set up a separate small line in DC for the streetcar?

I think you would be better off with a separate DC setup. It won't connect with the 3-rail setup so there is not a problem. A trolley setup will run as a closed loop or point-to-point so you won't have any polarity problems plus a good variety of models available.

Have a look at Rietze for modern trams / strassenbahn / streetcars.

Navemo has some Street Car models, primarily Swiss in prototype, including some models for 3 rail AC.
One other possibility would be to use a DC catenary system for the trams

Adding to this, if you go digital, you can use one controller (and power supply) both for the 2-rail trolley and your 3-rail Märklin layout.

Here is one, Roco. They offered it for DC and AC.

So all I need is two different kind of track, I can use the same power supply and controller?
