What is the difference between the #5100 and the #3600 rail sections?

Can I use the later rail sections with my older track?

I don't own any 3600 items myself, but I understand that they are completely compatible. Even the geometry is the same.

The major difference is the 3600 series track has solid center rail while the 5100 has center studs. You may need to tweak the ends of the center rail down slightly with a pair of pliers so the pick up shoe doesn't catch on it when transitioning between the two types.
