Hi all,
I have an analog Maerklin 3031 with a broken reversing mechanism (Fahrtrichtungsschalter); I don't know if the motor still works. I'd like to upgrade it to digital with a five-pole motor. I found this forum post with all of the information I need to convert it to mFX:

https://www.marklin-user...BR-81-Digital-Conversion

However, the only digital locos I have are Delta, and I don't have a digital controller yet. Should I convert my 3031 to Delta or mFX? If I convert to mFX and get an mFX controller, will I be able to run an mFX loco at the same time as my Delta locos?

Thanks!

Yes you can run delta and mfx locos together, they are all digital.

Options for your 3031 are a decoder and five pole motor from Märklin, or an esu decoder with the same motor. Or if you want to keep the cost down you could use a Märklin 60906 decoder. That would give you the ability to control the lights, telex and accel/decel. Plus it keeps the cost down, and is mfx

The down side to the 60906 is that it has no load compensation going up hills (same as your delta) and the low speed characteristics are not as good as a decoder with a 5 pole motor. Not I’ve used a couple of them and I think the are good value if you don’t want to spend lots

Before doing the conversion, what controllers are you currently using?

If you have the metal bodied controllers then some care is needed as the reverse voltage can damage the more modern decoders.

I'm using the newer white analog controller right now; it's been working fine with my Delta locos.

Are you planning to go digital in the future? If you are then spending on good digital decoders is worthwhile, if not then you may want to consider cheaper options.
