Hi,

I have a couple of Marklin loco's that have been in my family since the 1950's. I believe they made their way across the border from Germany to Austria, around that time.

They are in boxes and, to my eyes, look absolutely pristine, considering their age; One of them still has a handwritten price label on the roof. They have been in storage since at least the early 70's so I dont know if they run, and I have no way of testing them.

I've been asked to sell them. So what would a reasonable price be?

They are a:

3014 / RET 800 (Brown card box with red print)
and
3037 / E41024 (Blue/white box with picture on the front, Polystyrene insert)

I'll try posting some decent pictures, to show the condition.

Thanks

Hi Jonah,

Beautiful pictures, nice engines.
Try a search on Google or eBay for the same items and you will get an idea of price.

I do not collect this vintage, so I will have to leave it to other members to give you other ideas.

Hi

As far as I can see from the photos the loks are in good condition. Especially the 3014 has a lot of signs of tear and wear.

Usually the collectors for these models are looking for items in mint condition including the boxes etc.

The prices for these at the moment are:

3014 = 100-150€
3037 = 50-70€

These are average

Regards

Costas

Hi Costas,

Thats perfect. It was the evaluation of condition that I was most interested in.

Part of me would like to keep them and get them running again.

Is it still possible to buy working track and controller/transformers? What is the basic equipment I would need to get started?

Thanks

Hi

Seems to me that both are in working condition

Of course they need service (you can do it by yourself)

Any Märklin track can do the job. Better to go for C track

You need also a transformer. A 6647 transformer (only white one not blue) will do the job

Don't hesitate to ask

Costas

e,g Both locos can be converted to digital as well so they are for use know and in the future

You can get started with quite basic equipment. As already noted a suitable transformer and some track will suffice to get the locos running - although they may well need some maintenance first, with some oiling and general internal cleaning. People here will help with this.

You can purchase suitable track on eBay. There has been quite a lot of M-track on ebay.co.uk recently, but other options are k-track or C-Track. The track types can be mixed - but you need to get conversion tracks to go between them.

Once you have the locos running then a search on ebay for suitable rolling stock should prove fruitful, although some of it is rather overpriced, so be careful with your choices.

Members of this forum are quite ready to be helpful with advice if needed.

I don't recognise where you are located from your profile, perhaps you could provide a more generally known location, there may be someone living close to you who can help.

I have a couple of bits of track, literally two curves.

They have 5200 printed on, so am I right that these are M-tracks?

I've found loads of track on ebay and a couple of transformers: 6647 White. (Thanks) Is there a specific track section for attaching the power from the transformer?

At this point, I think I should probably be posting in a different part of the forum too ;-)

Thanks for everyone's help.

YES is M track

The feeder track in M is 5131

To make a basic oval using the 2 5200 that already have you need:

12 5200, 1 5106, and 1 5131

Of course you can do that using 12 5100 instead of the 5200

You can expand this by adding 5106 tracks

Hey everyone. Thanks for all your help. Yesterday I setup a simple oval track and got both locos running after a break of about 50 years.

Im going to start looking for coaches and options for building a layout now. I have my old Triang/Hornby trains from my childhood, so I want to try and combine both in a single layout.

Jonah, its good to hear you've kept them and they are running, as previous mentioned I also would recommend you clean the loco motor as you now stated youre going to build a layout as well., slo mentioned before was you could convert them to digital which isn't that expensive, for your Swiss loco you need a 60944 conversion set and a 60941 for your DB BR 41, in your introduction you've pointed out the locos made their way from Germany to Austria but this doesn't make them Austrian locos, they're made in Germany and 1 is a Swiss loco Ae 4/4/I (used both fro passenger or freight and the other a German BR 41 which was used for freight services.

If you decide to go digital, a digital controller isn't that much, a mobile station 1 isn't that expensive but I would stay away from them as they are known to fail, a mobile station 2 would be sufficient for you, everything you can buy on ebay Germany with lots of offers.
