Hi everybody!

I hope all of you would be fine.

Please, could someone tell me what are the precise and exact functions and purpose of the Märklin CAN Bus in the today Märklin Digital system architecture?

Is there any technical information from Märklin available about this?

Thank you very much. The best wishes for all of you. Take care!

Francisco

The CAN bus is used for connecting multiple control stations, mobile stations and boosters together.

There are excellent examples of the various combinations of connections in the Marklin literature.

This document from Marklin might help if you are able to read German.

cs2CAN-Protokoll-2_0.pdf (958kb) downloaded 79 time(s).

Further information can be found in this forum thread

It's very old technology (1983) developped by Bosch to car industry
Mercedes S-class was the first in 1991
It was a good noise immunity choice but today everybody speaks USB

Have a fun day !

The original spec was developed by Bosch for motor vehicles, but today it is an international standard still used by cars, but a very large range of products outside of cars.

No they don't. I have worked on CAN systems on spacecraft, there are at least three model railway systems I can think of that use the CAN bus, one of which is Marklin. USB is used for a restricted range of things used for consumer goods where a point to point connection is required. CAN allows a bus system that connects many things to each other without requiring a central controller like USB does.

I have worked with CAN & USB before motherboards exist on PC
USB use point to point connection but has HUB
Can bus like I2C is very old technology
Have you tried to troubleshoot a physical bus like Ethernet 10Base5 or CAN or I2C ???

USB is irrelevant to the question asked. Please let’s not get into a USB vs CAN bus argument.
Must build something

The question was about the CAN bus role in the Märklin architecture, not USB.

USB is not relevant at all to the original question. Please respect that !

Yes, all of them, and USB as well, but as already pointed out, only CAN bus is relevant to this discussion.

well it looks like a new member with very good capabilities and knowledge just got railroaded out of here, and I don't blame him.

Why so friggin heavy handed with him?

All he did was mention USB in passing and he got jumped on like a ton of bricks!

Well, I started a new topic about it since the dear new member did not get scope of the original question..

https://www.marklin-user...--I2C--Loconet-and-so-on

I don't really understand why it is "heavy handed" to try to keep to the original question... Confused
