I am wondering if the 7592 grade crossing has powered booms or if the booms are lowered by the weight of the train like the old M-track crossing.

I know it takes as power input and uses contact tracks but its not clear if that is all for the lights or if it also lowers the booms.

I am toying with the idea of adding a crossing in my extension area, but want something that will close the booms without a train present. I will switch the power digitally from my software as needed.

I looked at the Faller 120171 offering, yikes - expensive!

Hi
No, inside the gates you have a tiny piece of metal. In the vertical stand you have a tiny coil to pull down the gates.
Same power activates the gate and illuminate the lights (alas bulbs and no LEDs).
Even better, if you tear the gates by accident, you can put them back due to a very good design.
On my layout I use the standard train detection but also a relay (K84) to short the gates in advance by connecting both rails as if a train was present
Only drawback the speed of operation is not prototypical
Cheers
Jean

Here is the Marklin Digital Newsletter explaining how to control the grade crossing (and add a flasher unit and bell). Then the crossing can be controlled in a route.
