Hello all, I recently came into a Noch Marklin preformed HO layout that was my grandfather's. Based on what I've found, the layout is probably 1980s, and is completely analog. I am interested in getting it cleaned up and then if possible, switching it over to a digital set up. My thought was to buy a Marklin starter set and then wiring the connector box to the current layout and run the new train and mobile station on the old layout. So two questions right now, first, is it that simple to just switch the wiring to convert the old layout? Secondly, the Noch layout has 3 track loops and each track loop has it's own power wiring, will I be able to wire all three loops with just what's in the starter set, or will I need extra parts?
Thank you in advance

Short answer is yes, you can do what you propose and the controller in a starter set will power all the tracks. The issue with power comes when you start running multiple trains and other devices. But what you are proposing is a good starting point.

Suggest you look at some of the European suppliers for options on starter sets, or eBay. If you get something with a mobile station 2 as the controller and a loco with sound you will be off to an excellent start.

Cheers....

Yes you can do what you propose.

You can give power to the three sections from one MS2. Connect them in parallel.

The only think that you have to do is to cut off the small capacitors from the feeder tracks.

Märklin have a book about how you convert it into digital, product 03070, which you can find at Märklins homepage

Running the trains with a new digital setup wil be easy for you to convert, but you have to think about how you will control the rest

Good point, I didn't think about the capacitors of the feeder tracks. Definitely need to remove all of those as the mess with the MS2's head!

The MS2 will provide the ability to switch points digitally in the future with the addition of m83 decoders (although not something you need to worry about at this time).

Thank you all for the advice, got a starter set, and now have it all set up on the m track layout. The only issue I'm having is the middle loop 2 turnouts, one right after the next, and the locomotive keeps loosing power while going straight across both turnouts. It'll make the turn on either turnout fine, but one way it looses power, and the opposite direction it either looses power, or it has power, but won't move backwards or forwards once it gets between the 2 turnouts. Any thoughts on this?

Good to hear you have got it up and running with a starter set.

Could you post a picture of the area in question, and perhaps a picture of the wiring underneath same section?

Cheers....

Can I suggest you might want to look at C track for better running (apologies to my M track pals) Did you not get some track with the start set.
Take care I like Marklin and will defend the worlds greatest model rail manufacturer.

Check for voltage with a voltmeter in the section between the switches from centre stud to either outside rail.

Ensure the silvery centre tabs at the ends of the two switches are making adequate contact with the adjoining track or switch. You may need to bend them a little since they provide the connection for the centre studs.

Hope this helps,

Harold.

So as you can see, the layout's in rough shape, but as of today, i have it cleaned up to where all the tracks can run trains. The problem over the turnouts has disappeared, and I notice the train seems to loose power for a second in one spot for a couple laps, but keeps moving, and then a little bit later it's another spot. I'm thinking the track just needs to be run to get it back into smooth operation. The 5 turnouts on the set are electric , so I'm waiting on marklin 7072 switch boxes from ebay to set those up. The original transformer with the set was 6667A, can I just wrap the power wires for the boxes and turnouts to the yellow post, or am I going to need a different power supply? I also have some nature scenery on order, so once that comes in, I'll start making it look nicer and then obviously the building next to the church will need to be replaced along with the railing on the bridge

Hi, that's a cool little layout. Short answer is yes you plug in the yellow wires from the turnouts etc to the yellow socket on the transformer. They are then earthed through the brown or "0" socket on your transformer.

But the gotcha here is that if you are running digital, you may need to be careful about sharing a common earth through the track with your MS2 and the accessories.

I haven't really used the MS2 to run my layout, so I can't say off the top of me head if it's OK to do that or not. Perhaps someone else could step in here?.

Cheers.....

Mike
