Howdy everyone

Came across at a nice price, an original Delta ÖBB Electric locomotive, model 34587. Nice unit, I have the original 3154 as well, but what is in stark contrast on the 34587 is the pantographs and the red, oh the red.... so I was wondering, are the red pantographs prototypical on this one. On the 3154 they're silver (and much more aesthetic), so I am curious about the red. Any thoughts and facts are welcome

Hello:

Yes. The red pantos are prototypical for this loco and other Austrian locos as well.

Hello SJ,BigGrin

Yes, many Austrian locomotives have red pantographs, an example :

And indeed, most of my ÖBB model locos have red pantographs :

Including this 1044 Wub :

which I acquired because of this loco that pulled us from Zürich to Vienna in 1983.
I think with the eye of the faithful you can see red pantographs :

but not this one :

And yes my 34587 like yours has red pantographs :

and this 1141 has red pantographs :

but not this one ?RollEyes :

But, here's the clanger, looking at these images of the model's prototype (ÖBB 1141 012-3)
I'm not sure that these pantographs look red to me OhMyGod :

maybe it's just the light ?Laugh

Perhaps some of our members who particularly model Austrian locomotives like the esteemed John ("river6109") may be able to help?Confused

I've seen a similar topic in the past, where the red pantographs were discussed. My opinion now is what I think I said then, that the red colour would quickly get obscured by the carbon deposits from arcing and general railway grime and end up looking black. My preferred option is to have black pantographs on my model trains as that is what I see when I look at the real thing.

Hello Ray,

I can see your point Ray.
But for the images that show red pantographs, do you propose
that the pantographs have been washed clean?

Philip BigGrin

ThumpUp

I think the locos are newly washed in those photos.

I think PJ proved Ray's comments about red pantographs ending up appearingblack because the red is being obscured by said carbon, his last two pictures and the general grime on the locomotives themselves would make for that exact argument. I have two black pantographs sitting here and was pondering the change, based on Ray's comments, I think I'm going to swap them, but lets get some opinions, I swapped one. (comments about being prototypical are not being sought, this is about appearance)

I think that you should keep the red ones but weather them to darken them if you want a more realistic appearance.

To my eye the all black ones just look wrong. Other opinions?

Jim

I have almost all Märklin and mostly HO, although I do have a small number of Z gauge trains!
So many trains and so little time.

Here is a photo of my 1141 compare to one of the photos above. They are black but have a bit of a red glow from the signal just ahead! I think black looks fine in a realistic context. I do have some locos with red pantographs and I'm sure they would look better with some weathering, but I'm not about to mess them up at the moment. Everyone will have their own opinion on what looks best!
