Hallo out there,

my CS2 has the hardware version 3.1 for many years. Shouldn't there be an upgrade to this version?

Thanks,

Hi Pfalzbahn,
It's your software version that gets upgraded.
The latest upgrade is Version 4.2.9 (0) June 2019
This should help you out.

How do you want to update the hardware? New screen? New processor chip? Whatever, but for me the software update is the most important incident. For the hardware buy a CS 3. Yes, expensive, but probably it will be the cheapest way updating a CS hardware.BigGrin

Here read more about the CS 2 software update.

https://www.maerklin.de/...e/downloads/cs2-updates/

https://www.maerklin.de/...ate_4-2-9_info-01-en.pdf

According to your picture that CS 2 has the latest software version.ThumpUp

I am not looking for a software update. The software of my CS2 is updated.

Some locos with mfx decoders take many minutes to register themselves on my CS2. My supplier in Germany suggested that this may be a "firmware" (hardware) problem and it should be updated.

"Manchmal kommt es vor, dass sich eine Lok extrem langsam anmeldet. Eventuell kann das auch an der nicht aktuellen Firmware in Ihrer CS2 liegen. Falls Sie nicht die aktuellste Firmware in Ihrer CS2 haben, aktualisieren Sie sie doch mal. vielleicht geht das Anmelden danach ja schneller."

I will follow up with Maerklin.

If it is a hardware update then the easiest way to update it is to buy a later version of the CS2. Any later CS2 that you did buy would be a 2nd hand CS2 as they are no longer being sold new.

You could ask Marklin whether you could send your CS2 back to them for a hardware upgrade, but be aware that they might not have spare hardware parts to sell you. Any upgrade would be at a time and materials cost plus shipping and taxes. Probably cheaper to go and buy a CS3.

My 60214 CS2 is also at hardware version 3.1, but I don't see any need to upgrade it. A CS3 would logically be my next upgrade.

First of all I do have CS 3+ and never had a CS 2.

But I read several times that a software update for a CS 3 needs about 5 minutes for a CS 2 it can last up to 2 hours. If your mfx decoder needs some minutes this can be too. I have to confess at my CS 3+ as well as with my MS 2, sometimes the mfx reacts pretty quick, but sometimes it needs a long time in my opinion and I get impatient. Mainly it happens, if the tracks and/or the wheels of the loco are dirty. Either I put it on another place, clean tracks and wheels or just wait till registration is done.

Then there are software updates, they had to be done twice, before there are completly installed at your CS.

Third you may have a faulty update. At the CS 3 I have the possibility for a bootloader update to update the faulty update again and hopefully then correctly.

But Mäerklin wrotes you nothing about this. Your German words say, if you do not have the latest update at your CS 2, update it. Then perhaps it is going quicker. On your picture you showed you have the latest update already.

Thanks to both of you for your reply.

As I mentioned earlier I will contact Maerklin and see what they have to say. I would not go for another CS2. If need be I will rather upgrade to a CS3+.

And yes, the software update takes 2 uploads - I noticed that.

Cheers,

Pfalzbahn

TEE Wolf is correct. “Firmware update” actually means software update so that you have the latest/newest software update on your CS 2 and not the original installed software done by the manufacturer (Firma/Hersteller) hence the name Firmware. Hope this helps.

Happy Model Railroading

My German must be rusty. I didn't correlate "Firmware" with Software!

Thanks for pointing it out, Robert (& TEE Wolf).

That's an interesting if incorrect statement on the origins of the word 'Firmware'.

Firmware has always referred to when you need a combination of software and hardware - neither hard or soft, but in between.

If you want a quicker response from your CS2, then the only viable option is a CS3. I was using one today and it is considerably quicker than the CS2. if you did buy a cs3, your old cs2 will still get good money on eBay, if you want to minimise the cost of upgrade

Hi
The CS2 is from 2008 and the CS3 is from 20017 after 9 years!!!!

The hardware of the CS2 is obsolete, with the computer technology standards 9 years are ages!!! The CPU is slow the peripherals (memory etc) are slow too.

You can nothing do about it....

Sometimes the old hardware with new software is getting slower, till the moment that can't run the new software at all...

That's happen with CS2. The modern mSD3 decoders etc are designed for the CS3.

Of course can work on the CS2 but slower

If you want more speed the only solution to this problems, as many other members noticed above, is to buy a new CS3.

Regards

Costas

Slightly amusing

I reckon I have one of the last CS2's to come out of the factory. I bought at a very very good price 18 months ago a brand new LGB start set including a CS2 from a "toyshop" so it had probably been sat there for a year or more. That info page shows Hardware version 5.1 and serial number 41470. When I bought it people were having issues with the new CS3 and waiting for bug fixes etc. I find my CS2 very good but my comparison was to an MS2. it updates when needed I have no idea whether that is slow or fast as I will do something else watching a computer update is like watching paint dry. It does everything I expect of it. I have the best help line in the world - this forum I have yet to find a CS2 topic that has not been covered. When it dies I shall buy a CS3

The delay with registering. Is this a new loco or locos already registered on the CS2.
Take care I like Marklin and will defend the worlds greatest model rail manufacturer.

Thank you all for the response to my "problem".

Yes, the delay was with a new Loco.

I am getting closer to buy the CS3+.
