If I said to you that I was on the 9.40 from Ipswich to Liverpool St. you would probably say - Ho Hum. When my friend sent me an e-mail the other day saying "Rolling down to NYC on Amtrak 141" it sounded really exciting!

Interesting – at first I thought you were referring to using the description of the UK train vs the number of the Amtrak train, assuming both can be referred to by description and by number, but when I tried to find a train number for the 9:40 from Ipswich (to London Liverpool St, then Euston St, then onward to Liverpool??) I found none. I then grabbed the 1978–1979 British Rail timetable we purchased for travelling with a Britrail pass (and as a souvenir) and couldn't find train numbers there either. Is this a case of splendid isolation where the UK does not have train numbers while many other nations do?

I made it up as a humorous comparison with my friend’s comment!

I thought so, but it is interesting that there is a real-world difference too :)
