Some Maerklin steamers have a third headlight often mounted on the middle of the smokebox door and called a 'light for on coming train', it is usually separately controllable. How and for what was this extra light used in the prototypes.? Jabez |

In the days before phones were everywhere (era II), the third light was used to inform controllers along the route about an extra train (not on the written schedule) coming the other way. The light was turned off when the train met the extra train.
A special rear light configuration was used to inform about a following extra train. |
