#3015 + Uhlenbrock 76200 , decoder gets too hot

Hi!
I have converted a #3015 (Swiss Crocodile) using an Uhlenbrock 76200 decoder. Everything seems fine, but after a few minutes of running the decoder shuts down because of overheating. I have made sure that the decoder is placed as unobstructed as possible. It seems that the loco draws more current than the decoder can provide. The motor is in principle a three pole LFCM, but a bit more massive than the regular ones. The loco ran well in analog mode, is freshly oiled.
The decoder is rated at 1.2A for the motor supply with 200mA used for the field coils.
The resistance across the brushes is approx. 4 Ohm.
Thanks for any suggestions/help to solve this overheating problem.

The 3015 motor drains lots of current.
The Lok has three light bulbs on each end, which add to the total current drained from the decoder.
However, the decoder is temp. protected, see CV61.
If the temp reaches the preset limit (90°C), the decoder will shut off.
You can secure the decoder to the chassis with a screw, using the hole privded.
Allow good air flow is possible.
This could add some heat dissipation.
But, if the decoder doen't shut off, you should not be worried. |

I'm no specialist in this field, but I think your decoder may not be suited for a 3015 at all. I have heard these locomotives need a very specific decoder to work properly due to the motor size, current draw etc... The only decoder that I know will work offhand is the old Marklin 6080. (like in the 36159 insider locomotive) |

Jorge, I will attach the decoder directly to the housing (currently I use double adhesive tape).
John, yes the 36159 used a 6090 according to Helmut Kern's web site. I am not sure if I can get such a decoder.
I was wondering if the new Delta decoder with F1 would be an option instead?

Hans, use a thin plastic tape to isolate the decoder from chassis.
All tracks are "protected" under a green paint cover, but it could be punched thru when you tighten the screw. |

I put a Delta 66032 decoder into the Krokodil. While doing so, I found out that a capacitor in the loco was defective causing a partial short. So it turned out that the loco does not really consume that much more current. Since I had already installed the Delta decoder I left it in. It is a new Delta decoder with 80 addresses and light function activated. All I need.

I also converted my 3015 using a delta 66032 decoder, but I did not connect the light bulbs. This works fine. The motor draws almost 2A, while the decoder max is specified to be 1A, but no problem so far.
Now reading your post I might connect the bulbs also.
Officially a special decoder should be used, only to be installed by qualified and authorised.... etc., etc.....

Hello! I can attest that the 66032 does not get very warm (certainly not hot) even with the lights turned on. With four tin plate 40XX cars attached the loco takes our grades in strides. So far no signs of overheating. You may want to have a look at https://www.marklin-user...96&SearchTerms=swissif you want to simulate the original Swiss lighting scheme. I also bridged two solder pads on the back of the decoder to activate the F0 function. There are web sites by Schad and Bogobit showing how to do it. |

This is only to be exected with 15% slopes and at least pulling 50 waggons!  The decoder in the special Insider Replika croc has for very good reasons a decoder with stronger output trans. Regards, Lutz

I am not sure if the special C80 decoder is still available. On the parts web site I did not find the #36159. But when I looked at other locos with a C80 for comparison I found that a) the C80 decoder as a spare was almost Eur 200 and b) not available. But then I did not inquire about this particular C80.
Maybe somebody with good soldering skills can replace the output transistors with higher rated ones? |

Decoder prices on the Märklin spare parts list are indeed mainly for people with a healthy heart. However, when knowing the "correct" part numbers, they are not very expensive. (c91 for example for less than 40€, some new programmable decoders even as inexpensive as 16-18€).
The decoder for 36159 has part #600336, and if I am not totally wrong is only available under exchange with the defective part through the repair center, instead of the usual spare parts process - if still available at all (has therefor special marking with "x").
The nice thing with this decoder is that it just fits perfect into this old croc, opposed to other ones.
