One of my early purchases of Marklin was 3618 and the classic Rheingold 4228. Now thirty years on the 4228 is reserved for high days and holidays - the agony of getting it out of the box and the flickering lights & etc are well documented and its general fragility in my fudgy fingers. But the 3618 goes on and on built like a brick poop house making that familiar coffee grinding noise. I often simply run it solo but could you suggest what would be appropriate to run behind it. I am not strictly strict about authenticity. I guess it would sacrilege to suggest a rake of brown freight wagons wouldn't it !

Oh I don't know .....
Due to availability issues, engines like that were often used on lesser duties when the usual motive power might be a BR 55 or a BR 50.

We have all seen pictures of the LNER streamlined A4s hauling freight trains at one time or another.

Yes the 4228 is indeed a very nice train set. Have one myself, and have recently fitted Märklin current conducting short coupling, it makes handling a bit easier.

Regarding your 3618, you should run it what’s pleases you. A suggestion might be some 46802/3 ore some 46280/1/2/3 ore the set 46091

Hello,

I run my 3093 BR18-4 with a set of five tin plate D-Zug cars (4051 blue 1st class, 2 x 4052 green 2nd class, 4078 blue / dark red combined 1st class + dinning & 4026 green baggage). While not as visually striking as my 3318 and 4228 Rhiengold (BTW also a Christmas layout standard), my BR18 678 D-Zug is after 40 years still one of my favorite trains to run. So I think your lok will look just fine with some Era III DB passenger cars.

I use mine with Era III express coaches:

But I also sometimes run it with older Era II compartment coaches:

Mostly Marklin.Selection of different eras and European railways
Small C track layout, control by MS2, 100+ trains but run 4-5 at a time.

AFAIK the prototype of Märklin's BR 18.4, the one with the small wheels, was never used for the Rheingold in real life. So anybody running that combination is not strict about authenticity.

Other era II express train coaches will likely make a realistic train for the 3618.

Tom
