Märklin gets back on track.

The model railway manufacturer is back on growth course
Lok "Emma" from "Jim Knopf and Lukas, the engine driver" as bestseller.

After years of stagnation, the traditional Göppinger company expects sales of 112 million euros in the financial year 2018/2019 and thus an increase of four million euros compared to the previous year, as managing director Florian Sieber said a few days before the beginning of the Nuremberg Toy Fair , "In a difficult year for the toy industry, we can post slight growth, and our earnings and financial position continues to be good and solid."

The licensed "Emma" locomotive from the classic children's book "Jim Knopf and Lukas, the locomotive driver" by Michael Ende was a complete success. Shortly after the theatrical release of the eponymous film in March last year, the starter set for children over the age of six years was sold out. In the meantime more than 10,000 pieces have been sold, so it is now firmly in the program. In the new financial year 2019/20, Märklin plans to invest 6.5 million euros in new products.

This is really great news. But how come no Jim Knopf in new items?

I thought that when there were none, that that series had bombed. Blink

Hey Dave, all the Jim Knopf items were last year. I certainly wasn't expecting any new items for this series.

But what is not clear to me is if the items were only going to be produced for the year, or are they still going to produce them.

At the moment it is just a prognosis for the financial year ranging from May 2018 to April 2019.

I guess it depends how well the New Items orders go, and how many gold crocodiles they actually sell.

The MHI dealers have to buy minimum 2 pieces each and plenty start-up sets on top. For that, Märklin increased the production of the Golden Swiss Eye from 3.500 to 5.000 pieces.

But think about: Jim Knopf set costs 150 € at a dealer. Märklin may sell it, say for 100 € to the dealers. 10.000 pieces bringing 1 Mio € at sales. Märklin will have now 112 Mio € sales. So the 10.000 pieces are making less than 1% of the sales. Why so euphoric?

Not being serious Ranjit. Marklin appears to be doing OK although we are all going to have to pay more to ensure proftabilty.

We must hope that youngsters are prepared to take up the hobby and continue with it.

Take care I like Marklin and will defend the worlds greatest model rail manufacturer.

There is a model of Emma in the LGB new items at a relatively modest price and spec, to me thats quite clever marketing.

Would love to (but never will) see the management accounts behind the 112 MIllion Euro sales figure broken down to catergories such as:

HO My world
HO Start up
HO main listings
Z
G1
LGB
Trix
Minitrix
Digital Equipment
Other

Even better to see the costs and hence profit before overheads for each group - Maybe that would yield some surprises! I dont believe six year olds stay up till midnight on new items night THe range barely changes over the past decade but the it simply gets youngsters into the hobby until they may have enough money and inclination to stay up and dream of the year to come.
