I ask because unlike when modelling either British of that time - normal brake vans - or US of that era - cabooses - my new Marklin Era III set has just arrived with 5 freight cars but nothing that looks like a brake man or a brake van. Was there such a thing or not please?

The trains had automatic brakes, controlled by the train driver. No brake vans AFAIK.
In era II many of the brakeman's cabs on cars and coaches were manned during train operation.

Thank you. That solves one mystery for me.

Hi David,

In Germany through to at least late era III, most trains were accompanied by an escort car which was in some ways equivalent to the British brake van.
However it was usually attached directly behind the locomotive, and was used by the train crew as en-route quarters.
Here the train guard had an office to keep his timing and loading records (like in Britain), and it was also used by any other train accomplices such as a brakeman or shunter.
It was heated and included a toilet.
I do not believe they were used as a weighted brake vehicle to hold a train as they did in Britain.
Britain had many unbraked vehicles in their trains for many years up until the late 1940s at least.

These vehicles were called either:
1. Güterzug-Begleitwagen - Freight train escort car, or
2. Güterzug-Gepäckwagen - Freight train baggage car

Pwg vehicle in HO

I did a review of a vehicle here https://www.marklin-user...983-Pwg-gepackwagen-2017

HO Scale - Märklin (ep II-III and VI, C Track, digital) - 2 rail HO (Queensland Australia, UK, USA) - 3 rail OO (English Hornby Dublo) - old clockwork O gauge - Live Steam 90mm (3.1/2 inch) gauge.

From the design does it this mean that they were turned with the loks or did they run “backwards”?

They were not turned with the locomotives.
