I have recently acquired the three boxes with cars for the Kaiser Wilhelm II train set. I did not get the locomotive. My problem is that I do not have any documentation on the cars, and while I figured out how to get the lights to work using addresses 10 and 11, I need to replace a bulb and I cannot figure out how to take the body off the car. These seem to be very delicate and I don't want to break them. Does Marklin have a site where I could download them? Does anybody have the documentation to this set?

I have these cars (and a couple extras for spare parts). You do not need to remove the body to change lights, only the roof. Disconnect the end handrails that go from the car end to the roof. Carefully run a fingernail under one of the roof corners and gently pry it up. Don't be surprised if, once one corner is up, the roof comes loose easier than expected. Once the roof is up, the light bar and circuit board easily snaps out of the roof. Next remove the light diffuser, which can be stubborn, so be patient. One the diffuser is free, the light bulbs unplug easily and can be replaced. Make sure to use part number 61 0080 for the bulb, I'm told others can get too hot and warp your very expensive car roof.

Sounds like a good time to modify to LED's?

Hi,

The set was delivered in four parts. So it comes with four manuals and and four booklets with historic informations. The documents ..a1.. to ..a4.. are the manuals with the technical informations and ...b1... to ...b4.. are the booklets.

Thanks to everybody for their help. LEDs are a good idea. I'll try it on the car that needs the new bulb and if I like the way it looks, I'll do it to all the other cars.

Adding LEDs looks a little more difficult than I thought. It will become a future project.

Maybe it is better you start with less valuable coaces until you get more familiar with that type of task.
When you feel more confident you do it on your best coaches.

Hi Incognito (a real name is nice) /All,

I have just upgraded my 2681 King Wilhelm II to have LED lighting and I'm pleased with the results.

If you are interested visit my web page under the Tips section to find out how it was done.

Does anyone have the instructions which show how to remove the boiler and access the motor?

The set of docs which Markus provided previously show how to access the Decoder and removing the wheelsets but not the motor/wiring.

I can't find anything on M. website either but then again, I usually can't, their search function is crap.

Thanks in advance

Cheers

Cookee

Hi Cookee,

The exploded view of later versions of the locomotive (e.g. 33190) give good hints.

A question to everybody (out of ignorance) -But isnt changing to LED "transparent" to the user? -I mean; I seem to remember having seen bulp-shaped LEDs of all sizes, replacing the old bulps. These LEDs have the same housing as the bulps (being it with bajonet or thread for fastening), and comes with a series resistor already integrated in this housing.

Is my memory decceiving me¿?

Ah so the screw is in the chimney!! - I already checked that but it looked to have a solid bottom. I even tried a screwdriver down there in case my eyes were playing tricks on me.

I'll take another look next time

Thanks Markus

Hi, you can also remove the front of the boiler to have better view of the screw head. It is easier to place the screwdriver correctly.

Already checked that, and looked for a cap on top of the domes. All appear to be solid single piece.

On the other hand, if you (or anyone else) has this exact Loco and can show a picture of the part removed, it would be very helpful.

Cheers

yes, it looks solid, but the front cap of the boiler can be removed thus making the screw more accesible.

I'm looking to refurbish my rather old set - fortunately the carriages are still in good condition - I was thinking removing the lighting and decoders in the carriages with the lights I'm installing in the rest of my fleet - I use this tutorial from youtube (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JpYLH9MGKUY&t=855s) I'm assuming that I should be able to do that.

Also, with the loco - it is a rubbish runner - would one of the Marklin High-Efficiency Motor Upgrade Sets and the application of weights improve it's characteristics enough to justify upgrading it with sound?

I currently use my Fleischmann S10.1 to pull the Kaiserzug, but I would like to use the S10 from the 2681/2881 to pull my Fleischmann KPEV express wagons - and I'd love to have sound and smoke in it as well.

Let me know what you guys think.

Hello
The motor in the loco is state of the art. If yours is delta it will surely benefit of a new decoder. Weights under the cabin can improve its pulling power but not expect too much. My set also runs on a Fleischmann S10. 1
