I believe you get a display plinth, some wet mud from the Rhein, and that's it...

They just stopped the search. The magnetometer tech misinterpreted the readings and they came up with nothing...

Well Maerklin made a model BR53 for which they had only partial plans .... the lok was never built.

There are plans for the sunken lok I believe, so Maerklin could make a model.
But who would buy it?

If the loco was indeed found it would definitely be an interesting model, alone because of the story.

Now, I don't think it has the same appeal.

Hi,

Unfortunately nobody knows how the lost RHEIN is really looking like. It is belived that it is very similar to the CONCORDIA which was also built by KESSLER for the "Düsseldorf-Elberfelder Eisenbahn-Gesellschaft". But there are no known plans or pictures.

Märklin already found customers for the ADLER, the ESSLINGEN, the LIMMAT and another RHEIN (36473) which are all from the same period.

Regards

Markus

Unfortunately, it was announced that the search for the lost prototype failed (German websites):

Well, it was a strange action. Nowhere I read why they did this muddy digging try 3 weeks in advance of the planned original search. They should have used the 3 weeks for a better planning. Because a search area of 450 m² (538,2 yr²) and 9 m (29,53 ft) deep is really not a sufficient search room.

Anyway it is a pitty.

For all we know the loco might have been pulled out of the river during the War and there is no record of it!

A lot of stuff was done at that time that was not public knowledge...

Yes Markus, thanks from me as well. I have some interest in an early loco but not enough that I have actually bought one yet. BigGrin

If the right one came along I would consider it however and your list lets me look at what Märklin has done in the past.

Too bad they didn't find that loco though - that would have been cool. Cool
Regards,
Jim

I have almost all Märklin and mostly HO, although I do have a small number of Z gauge trains!
So many trains and so little time.

How much can we expect to be left anyway? I have little knowledge of water’s influence on these things, but I would expect that after 160 years in water and mud it would be completely gone. At least turned into a pile of rust. Perhaps the river bed could have protected it some way, but I find it unlikely.

I had hoped they had found it though.

I thought mud usually protects old relics

I thought mud usually protects old relics, it sounds a bit of a hit and run, I would (they may lready have) looked at the weather map and see if there were any floods or heavy rains and may have taken the loco further

If it was rapidly silted up then it would probably be in very good condition as the silt keeps the oxygen away which is what is required for the metal to rust and the wood to rot.

Consider the condition of the Mary Rose ship that was raised after 500 years of being in the silt of Portsmouth Harbour.

How about the 1850's locomotives found off the coast of New Jersey some years back. They were encrusted in marine life but still basically in one piece.

Even older than this is the preserved Viking ships and goods that are on display in Norway.. They were found in the 1900 - 1920s and are from 800AD.. Over 1,000 years in the mud! See https://www.khm.uio.no/e...berg/1-osebergfound.html

A visit to the museum is highly recommended.. Smile
