Friends,

I keep all my data of what I own on an Excel sheet.
Photos, manufacturer, place bought, art. number, railroad name, shop, first run location etc...

I wonder what other applications are there that would be more suitable for this type of database.

What do you use?

I use MS excel, though I only keep item number and details. I also have photos in a separate folder for insurance purposes.

I believe this has been discussed before and there is some specific software available - but for me excel does everything I need.

Kurt Amstutz (marklin-users.net member) has come up with online data base program where you can 'register' all your model railroad equipment.

You'll find it here

Another Märklin Data

I have used it and it suits my needs perfectly. I won't and try to explain all its uses (I'd get confusedBigGrin ) but it doesn't hurt to have a look and have a go. You can feed in as much or as little information you want.

You can also ask Kurt as many questions as you like and his replies are quick.

I use this:

Collectibles Organizer DeLuxe

It's a proper database system, and it's a commercial product, but it's well worth its price. I've been using it for more than 20 years (over various versions), and I have a comprehensive database of my Märklin collection of well over 5,000 items (sets, locos, wagons, etc). You can design your own database layout, and define all your own fields. It supports things like calculations, pictures, drop-down lists, links and so on.

I am not a fan of online or cloud-based systems, where you have no knowledge or control of where your data is held, or how it's protected. So all my information is stored locally on my own PCs.

I have no connection with this company, other than as a customer.

Just use whatever works best for you.

Excel will already do everything that the custom software does and it is cheap and widely available. It does take a bit more work to set things up but when you do, you get a software solution that is exactly what you want. The power of Excel is amazing once you learn how to use it.
Regards,
Jim

I have almost all Märklin and mostly HO, although I do have a small number of Z gauge trains!
So many trains and so little time.

I use YardOffice, but the website seems to be offline at the moment - the same thing happened this time last year, as the owner was a bit slack in renewing the domain name. Same thing might have happened this year.

When it come online again, url is http://www.musicmixradio.com/yardoffice/

Likewise! Plus what happens to your data when your Cloud service / Software provider goes belly up or gets shutdown? Most likely you won't ever get your data back again.
