UP844 in a 2017 shakedown after restoration

In April of 2017, the UP Steam Crew took to the rails with the Union Pacific 844 on a brief shakedown run between Cheyenne and Greeley to ensure the locomotive was ready for the 2017 excursion season. Many things needed to be run in and worked on, such as new valve rings and rod bearings.

In this video, we watch as the train is brought a few car lengths into the shop to clear the East shop leads for the Shop switcher. After everything was staged and put in correctly, the crew backs Eastbound, then highballs West and South down the UP Greeley Sub.

Several stops were made during this run, which made for an easy chase. Our locations include Crow Creek, Terry Ranch, Carr, then Southbound from Nunn. We make a quick stop to check bearing heat just outside Pierce

we STOMP out of our stop near Pierce and let the drivers fly down Union Pacific's Greeley sub. There's many a crossing to blow for, and many a town to fly through.

During this video, you'll see the engineer of the diesel work HARD on trying to hold the 1944 Northern back. The speeds vary from 70 to 45 mph.

we start off with UP Steam Manager Scott George as he gives whistling the flag in a try while UP Steam Fireman/Engineer Ted Schulte looks on.

From there, the train is shoved North and West onto the Great Western Railway for a brief lunch break. After lunch, we catch the train near Ault where the steam crew is wasting NO time in trying to get back up into Wyoming.

we begin with a FAST start from a dead stop with the UP 844 closer to Nunn, CO. We let go of the train for just a moment, but we catch it again as they head towards the Wyoming State Line at Carr.

We catch the train at Terry Ranch, then over at Speer where they start the 10+ Mile-long shove down Track 3 into Cheyenne. We wrap up with them backing off P-4, as they begin the process of breaking the train down to complete the plentiful day on the high iron. Next stop: IDAHO!

Wonderful loco !

During the closer views of the loco while running,
I was wondering if it was a real one or a super detailed shiny new toy

Great ! ThumpUp ThumpUp

Those closeups showed it wasn't exactly a smooth ride either. Reminds me of my my younger days in the 50's when the steam engines went up ,the other side of Porirua harbour from where I grew up.

Awesome.
Makes you wonder at the centrifugal forces applied when the con rods are going at such a high speed. Its no wonder the very first engine used to get thrown off the tracks before they realized about counter weights on the wheels.

Thanks for showing this Shannon.

Well seeing as the youtube videos are posted on YT 4 seperate items I decided to to do a post for each, as they contain different perspectives and towns our American friends may relate to in particular. Feel free to move them to one thread if you wish.
