Hi Marklin friends,

Here's an interesting coach on eBay:

https://rover.ebay.com/r...3%3Ag%3AszAAAOSwQita23ep

Supposedly an LMS coach on a post-war chassis. While there are original post-war LMS coaches they were "back stamped" meaning they were LMS coaches in the Pre-War years and then overpainted again to remove the LMS lettering. After all, Germany stopped exporting to Great Britain during the war so LMS export coaches were no longer needed and were repainted to be sold domestically. I believe the trucks were retrofitted to the post-war tinplate versions too.

The one in the auction above, however, remains an anomaly since it has post-war trucks and yet still remains the LMS stamps. Many things look wrong with this coach, including the poor paint work but I leave that up to the reader to decide! BigGrin

Best,

Paul

Edit: here is a thread that discusses such "back stamped" or "re stamped" coaches http://alte-modellbahnen...t-E-rueckgestempelt.html

As you will be aware both wagons did not sell and the seller has not relisted. I did send him a message letting him know that we considered them to be poor fakes. It was sent as nicely as possible for his information and he did not respond.

Yes that's the one....appears he did re-list.

I sent him a message too alerting him of my opinion - in as nice a way as possible. Unfortunately a collector group in Germany told him they thought both coaches are original...

Hi Juhan,

Interestingly enough that is how the originals were too, however, it was more difficult to see the lettering underneath. Marklin lithographed / stamped the wagons originally as Mitropa then overpainted them for the LMS lettering. Then at the start of the war they took some LMS cars and converted them back to Mitropa!

Here's what an original looks like:
