I have purchased a bunch of z scale track and such to build a coffee table layout. The locos all run quite happily on the track but as soon as they cross a set of points they are very likely to derail the bogies or stall.
I have a mikado, a br89 and a little diesel 060 all of which do not like the points. I also have an E40 wh ih has no trouble or problems at all. The points are marklin straight and curved types. I have cleaned them as best I can, but cannot see why they derail or stall the little engi s. Any ideas?
LOLOLOL they are just toys, grow up and play with them.

My suspicion is that your switch blades are not travelling far enough and making poor contact with the main rails. If these points are slightly open you may catch a flange and cause derailments and you will have no electrical contact on the moving point causing stalling. There are two things to check - 1. Make sure the inside surfaces that need to come into contact are clean and 2. make sure the switches' solenoids are moving the required distance to ensure a tight closure.

Hope this helps,

Harold.

Thanks for the reply Harold, I did notice while bench testing that the switch blades are not tapered or angled like their HO cousins, and this causes the lighter wheels to almost jump off the track sometimes. I will heed your advice.
