I just joined the forum and am glad to be here. I am getting back into model railroading and started acquiring Marklin Z Scale items. I purchased starter set 81562 several years ago and my second acquisition (Dec-17) was a non-running (but headlight works) 8885 4-6-2 Locomotive that was vintage 1972 and got it running by cleaning and lubricating it.

My most recent acquisition was a non-running (but headlight works) 88811 2-8-2 locomotive. The drive wheels were not movable. I spent time cleaning and lubricating them, got it back together and hoped that was all it needed to run. However, it would not run. I took the body off and inspected the unit and noticed the left side brush was loose and it fell off. The brush appeared to be still on the shaft. Maybe I broke it. Please see pictures attached below.

I am a novice dealing with these engines, especially with the motor. Would you guys please recommend what I do next. I am not sure who and how to order parts and can't seem to locate a parts breakdown and listing off of the Marklin website. Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks for your help.

Tom S.

Hi Tom,

Welcome to the forum.

Unfortunately I see only this instead of your pictures:

It is likely that you see your pictures, but nobody else. Maybe you can edit your post.

Markus,

Trying to get the photos unlocked from Photobucket by upgrading my account.

Hopefully, they will follow through so the photos are visible.

The 88811 is similar to the 8881...

Here is a spare parts list on Marklin's site and there is an "explosion diagram" also on that page.

You can change to English very easily at the top of the page. I find that many manufacturers put more on their German versions, so I usually browse in German anyway.

Looks like you need a new brush ... Marklin 89891. There are several dealers in the USA who offer them... ahem. :D

Frank,

Thanks. I though so myself initially. Thanks for you response and providing the part number.

My confusion, being a novice as indicated before, is the engine "shaft" appears to have the missing brush (from the brush photo provided initially) affixed to it and with some "ridges?". I assume the engine "shaft" would be smooth and would spin between the brushes. I was concerned there was damage caused by some electrical issue before I got the engine. See close up picture below.

Tom,

I think what you are referring to as the "shaft" is the split-ring commutator. The brush's head, when the brush is in place, should touch this but not be stuck to it. If you give the head a tap, see if it falls off the commutator. Then apply power directly to each side of the split ring and see if it moves at all. If it does, the motor should be good and then you just need new brushes.

Carim,
I got most of the brush head off of the split-ring commutator. It was harder to get off that I thought and there is a small piece left.
I applied power from a 9 volt battery to each side of the split-ring commutator unfortunately but the motor did not run.
I attached two picture below of the motor from both sides. With the brush affixed to split-ring commutator and the motor not running, could excessive voltage caused heat that may have burned out the motor?
Anyway, I quess my next step is to acquire a new motor. I believe I have the correct model # for the engine as Marklin 8807 - Southern Steam Locomotive and Tender. I will look on the Marklin website.
How difficult is to replace a motor?

Motor is 211911. It is tricky in that you might need to solder AND there are some form factor differences with the latest versions of the motor making it likely that the upper shell can short out on the capacitor. Other than those - it's a breeze! :D

I would try the brushes first and then consider the 211911 motor. The same place where you bought the brushes also stocks the motor.

Hi Tom,

Well I think if the brush is so firmly welded to the commutator, we have to assume that the motor is headed for the scrap pile! Crying

Unfortunately, I have no experience with models of steam engines, so I'd suggest that you follow Frank's advice. Perhaps this site might be able to help you a bit
