I agree someone goofed or thought report and fix again (re ballast) next time a team is working this line ... shame all drivers seem to be doing high speeds at that point and could not see the break in track as they may have at low speeds

,

I find it quite alarming there doesn't seem to be any safety procedures in place when the track is not 100% in order., like India, they don't do any track work until 200 or so people die after an accident.
also the dogs which hold the sleepers in place should give enough sturdiness so that the track doesn't move differently at the joint., I can't see that the ballast itself wasn't sufficient for a track to move or the joint plates to break,

Yeah its not hard to have warning devices that can tell if track is broken run a continuous wire link across the plate and outer track? if plate breaks so does link, its the automatic reporting system that costs the money. Mind you the US economy is so %^^&* ppl would steal the copper wire

The train company doesn't want to spend anything, look at how many accidents in the US are happening but could have been stopped had an acs system been implemented on track and locos, but as usual train companies cry poor and have delayed its implementation time and time again?

What what is the cost of rectifying a train derailment law suits death etc?

Cheaper to hide in the corporate protected box and ignore it until your term as CEO, director etc is gone and you are no longer there?
