I always wondered how many steam locos actually originated from German designs and how many had been copied.

any idea ?

There were a number of designs that were introduced for the German Railways as well as others that were developed for other railways. German designed locomotives could be found in Southern and eastern Africa, the Middle East (Turkey, Syria, Iraq, etc) as well as in Switzerland, where private railroads often bought German designs along with Swiss models. A number of German locomotives were taken as reparations by France and other countries after WWI and a number were left in other countries after WWII. I presume that some were taken as reparations by the USSR as well, although gauge differences may have limited the use to parts of the network only. AFAIR, there were also some German designs which were built for South American railroads in the 1930s. I don't remember if the Germans introduced rail to their Chinese territory (Tsingtao) in the late 1800s.

An one-page overview of standard steam locomotive (“Einheitsdampflokomotive“)
and newly designed steam locomotive
(“Neubaudampflokomotive“) classes built in Germany after 1925, i.e. after foundation of the Deutsche Reichsbahn and then by the Deutsche Bundesbahn:

And more holistic English Wikipedia entries, covering both German states after 1945:

And a database of all steam locos somehow connected with Germany or German states since the inception of steam engines:

The link leads to the chronological table.

The BR 95 was originally a Prussian design (T 20)
At the creation of the Reischbahn it was **briefly** numbered BR 77 to be finally classified in BR 95 .
You'll find it under T20 , year 1922
Cheers

The only information I found indicates that it was rather the other way around:

https://en.wikipedia.org...tives_and_multiple_units

Maybe members from Poland know more?
