Can Marklin 3-rail M track be successfully laid on 1" or 2" rigid foam insulation board (pink or blue)? If so, will track screws hold in the rigid foam insulation board? Thanks.BigGrin

I haven't tried this, but I don't know if it would hold permanently. Maybe hot glue might be a better option.

I'm sure you could lay the track OK, but the fixing might be an issue.

I have used a product called Pinex and then used longer screws into the 1/2" plywood below. Still quieter than straight onto plywood. It does make the track too rigid and more work if a piece of track needs replacing. You could buy longer screws and nuts and use that combination in your case. In my next project I am considering using corrugated cardboard on top of the 9 mm plywood.

I thought about insulation board but in the end decided to use 3mm closed cell polythene foam over ply. Seemed to me that using long fixings into insulation board was going to give more trouble than it is worth.

Screws won't hold if you screw them into the foam without anything else. I would recommend you to get some rigid 2 mm cardboard and cut out small squares (~2 x 2 cm) that you glue on top of the foam with white wood glue wherever you want to put the screws. This definitely works, I have tried.

If you are after noise reduction the only thing to do is attach the track to the track underlay then attach this to the plywood below. this way there is separation from the track to the baseboard . I used a Ozzy made underlay called TRACKRITE which I formed to fit between the walls of the rack & then white glue which attached the underlay to the foam beneath . Trackrite is almost the same as the insulation which is wound around hot water pipes & is easy to work with . In the FILES section there should still be a copy of my Trackrite instructions .

Cheers Tom in Oz .

Hot glue would probably not work on foam. It has a tendency to melt. I haven't tried, though.

I'm laying my C-track directly on pink insulation board. I sink a 1" dowel every so often to secure the track. I use a 7/8" paddle bit to drill into the foam. Works well for me....

Something popped up on the Bar & Grill this morning about using the Non Slip insert that goes onto kitchen draws , a type of open mesh weave but with a sticky surface both sides . Link to Post _

over the years there have been several ways to sound-proof a layout;
i.e. getting rid of as much resonance from the tracks to the layout

(the noise from the wheels to the rails cannot - should not be avoided)

cork - various plastics - rubber-like sheets etc etc

i've found that a simple “anti slip mat”
( antirutschmatte )

<https://www.rakuten.de/produkt/jes-collection-antirutschmatte-75-x-30-cm-verschiedene-farben-fuer-haushalt-boot-wohnmobil-auto-caravan-10-x-a-1553256050.html>

as found in various DIY stores - typical 75x30 cm
to be used as anti-slip in drawers or under rugs
- actually gives a very nice result - compared to price and work-effort

currently it can be bought for 1 (one) euro pr 75x30cm

laying it double gives a very noticeable result

added bonus - the c-track sticks to the mat as glue

PS
i’ve only so far laid it in the hidden areas
so I dont know how it works when creating landscape
around the c-track

Yours sincerely

I haven't tried this yet but SWMBO told me that she has a bag full of the stuff some where in the garage , just a matter of finding it to see how it works with K or M track.

THANK YOU TO ALL WHO RESPONDED TO MY QUESTION ABOUT LAYING MARKLIN TRACK ON RIGID FOAM INSULATION. THESE ARE A LOT OF GOOD IDEAS.

Have you checked this thread: Sparrow's new shelf layout
https://www.marklin-user...s-new-shelf-layout/page3

Unfortunately the pictures can't be viewed anymore, but there are some videos on page 3. As far as I recall he made cutouts for the C tracks in the foam.
OneGauge Marklin and MTH, ESU ECoS 2.1 on LGB tracks. MTH 3-rail 0-gauge, DCS on GarGraves tracks. Z: Rokuhan tracks, analog or DCC+TC Gold.

I am always working with 3 mm cardboard "roadbed" glued onto white rigid styrofoam boards with white glue. C track is then fixed with screws driven into the 3 mm cardboard.

(I once used Liquid Nails adhesive to glue C track directly onto foam boards for the former Thunder Mountain layout. Worked well, but track removal was a mess when dismantling: not so good.)
