Hello all!

I recently acquired a Marklin/Trix U.P. Big Boy 4015 model# 22599 DCC w/Sound,No Smoke
I have a couple newbie questions for anyone more knowledgeable on this engine;

Parts
I have the parts diagram from Marklin and am missing the dummy lamp(PN 216824) on tender and a couple other small items.
Baby also needs new Pick-Up shoes.
I've sent an email to Markin requesting parts availability, they responded with a canned response that it could take some time for them to respond.
I also found all the parts on the Walthers (walthers.com) site, 442- prefix. I ordered and they took my card info. Everything is on backorder/special order status.
Are parts for the 22599 still available?

Current status;
DCC, engine runs great, all sound functions operational, all lights operational, EXCEPT for a recent drop of the engine to a table.
I knocked off a number board shroud and now both number boards light will NOT illuminate. I verified the connection between the PCB and the
connection fingers on the inside of the engine shroud (PN 225 322) are good. I followed the wires to the front inside of the engine shroud (PN 225 322), where the wires disappear into a
plastic triangular piece that would not budge. There seems to be a tiny PCB in the triangular plastic piece.

Using a NCE Power Cab w/SB5 system.

Any help will be appreciated from Trix "Big Boy" owners/experts.

Thank you.

Those are centre-rail pickups, not the wheel-pickups needed for a Trix version.

Apart from power pickup, the Trix and Märklin Big Boys will have many parts in common and it cannot harm to check the latest manuals for current spare part numbers.

Hi Dave Banks!
Thank for the info. It never occurred to me to look under Marklin Big Boy.
The 37995 was there.
I found most of what the 22599 needs except for the pickup shoes.
It looks like they made some changes, catching the axil vs the side of the wheels.
Possibly there is a conversion kit?

The illumination of the number boards is still an issue. It looks like you may have to replace the
metal engine top shroud (my description). I could just let the number boards go dark, but what fun is that!

Thanks Dave

Hi HO, you are correct on the shoes, pick-up on the wheels.
I'll review the other models for similar.

Any idea on the number boards?
They worked until I bounced it on the table.
I agree with Dave, this engine has to be handled with care, although it's
like handling a snake when trying to work on it for the first time.

I was thinking I may have to try surface mount LED's if no other recourse
or get the whole assembly. Hopefully someone has already had to deal with this issue and can share.

Thanks

Hello Fred, your most welcome. Your "slider" as you call it is #65 Schleifer part number 216 976. There are two of them. When you get the new one do not bend any of the contact if you can help it unless they are misaligned. When you mentioned "slider", I just automatically thought you had converted it to three rail like I did mine but on thinking about it now it would not work as your wheels are not a NEM version like my Trix version but RP-25 from memory & I stand to be corrected there Confused.

Dave. Let me start off thanking you for sending me in the right parts direction, other Marklin Big Boy parts.

Tom , thank you too, for the additional input.

TENDER:
I ordered E186180 and E186181 on EBay today. Both part numbers come with a grouping of needed parts for the tender. With these parts the Tender will be complete.

ENGINE:
Pickup shoes
- The type of pickup shoes (216 976) used on the Trix 22599 does not seem to be used on any of the current Marklin Big Boy models. I could not find 216 976 as an orderable number on Marklin, Trix or Ebay.
Walters - I have an order through Walthers for part number 442-216976, which immediately went on back order. We'll see.
Conversion - is there a way to convert the Trix 22599 to be able to use a newer style of pickup shoe.

Number boards
- do not illuminate after a drop to the work table.
I have looked very close at this assembly and have yet to see how the connection from inside the engine shroud routes up to the number board. It looks like the internal wires route to the front through a triangular plastic piece which has a small triangular pcb in it. Possibly the wires connect to this pcb that may have a small ribbon cables that route up to the number board pcbs/smd lamps. Speculating.
Applying some repair with what I currently know seems beyond my reach at this point.
*Options
- order the whole assembly, Trix PN: 225 322 road number 4015. Trix not available. Marklin not available.
- I emailed Helmuts Hobby (Marklin/Trix service center) in Virginia USA to see if they could repair.
- Would Marklin do the repair at the factory?
- repair the number board shroud and leave dark.

Sorry for rambling.
Regards,
Fred

Hi Dave, when I received the pre-owned Trix 22599, both sets of shoes were twisted and bent.
I re-formed both to the best of my ability. Two little tabs that hold the metal in the plastic housing broke off on one set.
Even without the tabs the metal sits somewhat secure in the plastic housing.
The engine operates.
I wanted to get new shoes as it's already getting very tough to find these parts for the Trix model.

I think I found something yesterday.
Trix model 22063 showed what looks like the same shoe and orderable on the Marklin site.
Trix model 22599 part number 216 976 - not available
Trix model 22063 part number E216 976 - orderable, 16 Euro about $49 in shipping
I placed an order through Walthers (422-216976) $39 for 3, 2 replacements and one spare.

Between the Ebay orders for PN:186180 & 186181 (Tender parts) and the shoes I think I'm in very good shape.

The last question is the lighting for the number boards.
I have an email out to a Marklin Service center in Virginia.
Not happy with myself here as this would not have been a problem if I hadn't fumbled handling of the engine.

I'll keep you posted. Thanks again

Same part. A few years ago Märklin started to prefix spare part ref. numbers with "E".

Fred I have no answers for the lighting problem except to check via a test lamp what has & what has no power. If the contact on the chassis has power when the function is turned on & lights up the test lamp tick that box. If you can get 1 light to operate from contact to that lamp you have a win. Just use a piece of spare cable to do the experiment with ensuring the body is making a decent earth contact. I have never had issues with this before other that the contact plate is not making proper contact with the reciprocal pin. Good luck. Another silly thing, is your controller set to preform this function?

See this post bearing in mind you did drop your loco body on the table: https://www.marklin-users.net/fo...-22599-Lights-don-t-work

You might need this part : #10 216917 Kontaktfedersatz 7,99 € (Available)

Hi Dave, thanks.
On the tender the reverse lamp works.
On the engine the cab and forward lamp work.

The number boards did work until i dropped the engine to the table. Specifically, on the left number board.
The shroud around the lamp popped off. Neither illuminate now. I did use a volt meter on the three copper prongs that deliver power to the number boards and cab light located at the center of the engine. All toggle off and on with F0(forward lamp and number boards) and F4(cab light).
The problem is definitely between where the two wires go in to the small triangular plastic piece at the front inside top of the metal engine shell and the little smd pcb's at the number boards.

Any idea if I could send the shell for Marklin to repair?

Thanks,
Fred

I just heard back from Scott at Helmut's Hobbies (540-349-4910).
They were successful at repairing the number board lights.
Scott mentioned they knock out the two tabs that hold the front
boiler plate on and repaired the light assembly.

He also ordered a pair of shoes (E216976) for this engine.

Again, Dave & Tom, thanks for all your guidance. I am new to Marklin/Trix,
and am very impressed with their models. My "Big Boy" is well on
it's way to being 100% operational and complete.

Thank you!

Just got the Boiler shell back from Helmut's Hobbies.
All repaired.
They replaced the number board assembly.
I'm not sure how they got the front Boiler open to get to the assembly.
They replaced LF:215070008 PG:63

One final note, according to Scott at Helmut's Hobbies, the X4015 (and others) overlay is no longer available.
I lucked out that I had both of them for reuse.
