It may have a DC motor and a decoder that would allow it to run on AC. I believe all G1 items from Marklin will run on AC if they are factory stock standard.

Hi,

#5797 is a version for AC with sound. It has the classic Märklin Motor which can be used for AC and DC but has an additional electronic to switch the direction with the Märklin -24 V pulse. To convert the loco to DC the electronics must be exchanged with two larger diodes.

From the late 1970s until ~ 1985 Märklin offered different versions for AC and DC. The DC- version of #5797 is #5497.

Regards

Markus
