Have lots of M track and remote/electric controlled switches on layout. Most switches use larger lanterns.

Switches with large lanterns cause derailment when turning for longer cars such as 43584 DB passenger car.

Cars do not have a problem using switches e.g. 5202 that have smaller lanterns.

Is there a kit or process to change out larger lanterns for smaller lanterns?

I do not want to replace switches. I just want to change out the larger lantern for the smaller lantern only without pulling up track.

Thank You

Jim

Hi Jim,

I remember reading old 60's Märklin Magazine and there was an article from
converting large lanterns to small lanterns. It included necessary part numbers
and photos from the work done.

I beleive that those parts aren't available anymore from Märklin.

Best regards

Åke

Hi again,

It was actually Märklin Magazin 3/78 where the upgrade was described.

It is really easier and cheaper just to buy the new style m-track turnouts. They are still pretty cheap on eBay. The problem is that they very often need a good refurb before they can be used reliably on a layout. Martin has a good video on giving old m-track turnouts a new life..

Thanks for that article Åke, that was great. It's going to help me with something I've planning, so thank you!

There's also an article a few editions earlier which shows how to modify 5127 manual points for electric operation.

Has anyone tried the conversion and made it work?

I learned it the hard way after I did test running on my new M track layout that the old 5202 and 5117 turnout lanterns are rubbing against the 43571 coach. From Åke's diagram, I'll need 35605(left) or 35609(right), 75004(screws) and 75701(nuts). I also need to cut the plate to 28.5mm and drill two holes. I can't read German and that's all I can understand from the diagram.

I'd appreciate any tips if anyone has done this. Thank you Åke for the diagram.

Thank you.

Regards,
T
