The Largest Ghost Station in Europe is to reopen as a hotel, with a new station next door. The French have agreed to reopen the railway line on their side of the border.

Yeah, i hadn't heard of it either. When I first saw the photo at the head of the article I thought it looked a bit like the models you see of Bonn station.

The FD & my self were returning to Pau , France from Spain about 15 or so years ago & decided to drive up thru this valley & over the mountain range to get to France . We had no knowledge of this large rail station & when we saw it decided to do some urban exploring . we did the external views , the disused locomotive depot , the goods yard & the tunnel entrance then walked back to the massive stone building & found a unlocked door & decide to have a quick look around inside , the part we were in was the hotel reception area which was used for overnight stays waiting for the next train . Most of the rooms we looked into were in a very run down condition with water leaks showing on walls , broken windows , damaged furniture everywhere but you could see the beauty in what was left.

After exiting the building we then started making enquires with the locals for more info but due to the language barrier we had little luck & decided to look up more when we got back to Australia . The Hotel restoration was being mentioned even then , Time must move slowly in that area of Spain . About 3 years ago we were in the same area & decided to pay another visit but the station / hotel was still in the same state of disrepair except for being locked more securely so no internal visits . All in all a beautiful building & it would be nice to see it be restored for use in future years .

An interesting report. I somehow doubt that it took until the eventual opening to figure out that the two systems had different rail gauges, but I guess that's BBC journalism for you.

The grandiosity of European (and US) stations is a real eye-opener to a visitor from the antipodes.

I remember Canfranc from one of the early Quizzes that we had on the forum.. I really hope that it can be restored to its original splendour.. It is one of those places on my bucket list..
