Reports in the Dutch press say that the traindivisions of Alstom (making the TGV) and Siemens (making the ICE) are investigating a merger, possibly to be concluded next week.
This in an attempt to battle intense competition in that field of bussiness.
One of the biggest competitors is the Chinese manufacturer CRRC,holding orders for 1,765 highspeed trains (15,960 coaches) in China alone.
Alstom of France have been granted the order to produce the future Dutch intercity trains, the ICNG,Inter City New Generation, total 49 times 5 coaches and 30 times 8 coaches, servicespeed 200 km/h.
In addition a trialorder of 2 Benelux trains has been placed for traffic with Belgium, more are likely to follow.

The Dutch ICNG could look like the Alstom highspeed trains on order for Amtrak

Siemens tried to buy Alstom some years ago without success. So its on again then:

German industrial group Siemens (SIEGn.DE) is likely to decide on Tuesday to pursue a multibillion-dollar rail merger with French rival Alstom (ALSO.PA) rather than Canada’s Bombardier (BBDb.TO), two sources familiar with the matter told Reuters.

As Canadian Bombardier makes a lot of locomotives in Germany these days, its clear there has been an international shifting of landscape.

China of course is a special case, similar to India, a protectionist market that wants to grow internal production capability (and that is perfectly reasonable and expected within reason).
