Following a holiday in Capetown (Dutch:Kaapstad) in January last, which was most enjoyable, the Republic of South Africa has stolen a piece of my heart.
This beautiful country with its chearful people also has some great railways.
These clips from the West Cape area show electric locomotives in various liveries, the portals for the overhead wires almost look Dutch style, made of simple steel profile.
Many names of geographical areas still reflect the Dutch explorations of the past.

"Breede Rivier" is old Dutch for "Wide River".

In the past Lima have been making H0 models of South African trains, have never seen them overhere, and nothing in AC as far as i know:

To me,this is a nice change for the usual European items.

Any RSA members wishing to comment please?

Yes, we have some interesting trains here, and there is a large group of people who model South African trains and South African layouts.
The South African landscapes are very different from European landscapes.

You would have been very welcome to visit us all, so on your next visit ( I am sure that there will be a next visit) you must please make contact and we can invite you to meet us.

I grew up in SA, left there in 1991
The Dutch influence resulted in a language called Afrikaans, which shares a lot of Dutch vocabulary, hence the names and words look like Dutch.

Many thanks,John.
There will certainly be a next time!
I had in mind to come again next January, our wintertime with sub zero C temperatures, but the spouse overruled me,we are going to Zanzibar instead, she was a bit worried about an overkill of emotions.
So,my timescale is Capetown over the next 5 years, will probably stay at Seaview, close enough to the city.
During our last visit we had a terrific local guide called Randall Davis,he showed us all the highlights, and much more:Table Mountain,Stellenbosch,Chalk Bay,Hermanus, and all in between.
Lunch/diner at Camps Bay,how nice!
And of course we took the boat to Robben Island, very impressive.

Hartelijke groeten,
Paul.

Yes,i am aware of the Dutch influence on South Africa, for better and for worse.
The Dutch founded Kaapstad (Capetown) as a replenishing port for vessels sailing from Holland to the East Indies.
Sometimes captains took the wrong course and ended up in False Bay,on the wrong side of Table Mountain.
During our stay at Capetown we could overhear some Afrikaans language, sounds like very old Dutch to us.
At Stellenbosch we saw the Dutch style of building, some front views of the wineries look like the front views of 17th century housing in Amsterdam.
The Dutch were the first to plant grapes in the Cape area.
All in all it was a very pleasant stay.

And there is freight by rail too:

What would be the best source for Lima South African H0 trains?
I might buy some in future just to play with.
The Marklin items will remain in the displaycases, too costly to play with.

Thanks all.
