Good morning, devoted Märkliners.
I have very recently bought for two of my grandsons the above Starter Sets (+ a C2 Extension Set). Needless to say, I got myself into trouble. Now, they would like to remote control the turnouts!

Q1. What hardware is needed to equip the turnouts?
Q2. Can the Function Keys in the IR controller be used to support this functionality, or do I have to buy some other type of controller?

Thank you in advance for your input.

Hi Vasco,

There are two ways to control the turnouts. Either way you will need turnout motors, one for each turnout, or two if you have a three way turnout.

The traditional way to control the turnouts is to use switch boxes which are wired directly to the turnouts. You can do this and keep using the IR controllers just for the trains.

The "high-tech" method is to power the turnout motors from a solenoid decoder and do the switching digitally. The IR controller cannot support this method and you would need to upgrade to at least a mobile station. The current version is the MS2.

For the tradional method I would use the 72710 or 72720 control box powering 74491 or 74492 turnout motors

Small C track layout, control by MS2, 100+ trains but run 4-5 at a time.

RayF: thks for your helpful reply.

But is it not the case that I also have to buy some sort of power pack for each of the Control Boxes?

Hi Vasco,

Welcome. The correct way is to use a separate transformer for accessories once you go bigger, but with only 4 turnout motors that only require momentary power when you switch, for now I will use power from the track and not spend extra money and more complicated wiring that comes with a second transformer.

Regards

Leon

Thanks for your reply, Tower. So, how do you "use power from the track" for the 72710?

Brown from track into the side of control box 72710 (Connect to the "O" terminal under the track.) Two Blue wires from box to the turnout motor. Yellow from turnout motor connect to the "B" terminal under the track.
