Hi,

As someone who is fairly new to Marklin and electric loks in particular, I have become more and more interested in the Swiss Krok. If you had never owned a Krok, would you purchase a Krok from a previous year such as the double set or the black Toy Fair version, or would you wait until the fall 2017 or 2018 new items catalogs arrive? Perhaps Marklin will release new models with more features, such as interior cab lighting?

I welcome everyone's opinion.

Respectfully,
David

Hi foumaro,

Thanks for the link. The set looks amazing! I'm not sure if I like the weathering enough to purchase it though - but it is going for a great price. If you like the weathering, I would say go for it!

Hi!

There are two prototypes of "the Swiss Krok" (Roman numerals II and III).

The 26591 is a good choice in my humble opinion. It's the last Krok that came with a brushless motor (SDS). It is the older Märklin mould of the "III" crocodiles. Older versions like the 39560 have a different version of the brushless motor.

Recent models show a different prototype (Roman numeral II, not III). It has two standard motors.
I don't have any crocodile with two motors - I don't like the idea of having two motors in one loco.

With respect to digital features and sound, the older models are not as good as the modern ones (watch out for yellow LEDs). But crocodiles are always impressive - and operating sounds of electric locomotives quickly become boring, so you don't lose much if get an older model that just has whistle sound.
Regards
Tom

Cab lighting added is possible and available as the shellbody of central section has interior space for lighting and wiring to chip, but i prefer to have the correct prototype of pantograph rather than the uncorrect pantograph having been using for many generations.Mad

OK here is the heretical view of the question.

Never owned a krokodil.......never wanted to own a krokodil...........never will buy a krokodil. Why?

Such a big loco not suited to small layouts, and with such a limited geographical utility in the real world. That is my reason, and maybe the same reason why others WOULD buy it.

Just saying.

Kimball
HO Scale - Märklin (ep II-III and VI, C Track, digital) - 2 rail HO (Queensland Australia, UK, USA) - 3 rail OO (English Hornby Dublo) - old clockwork O gauge - Live Steam 90mm (3.1/2 inch) gauge.

In the beginning I hesitated to buy a Swiss crocodile.
I changed my mind when I bought a German crocodile BR E 94/194 and saw how cool it looks on turnouts and curves.
Then I ignored the limited regional usability and bought a Swiss croc.

Buying a Crocodile usually leads to additional costs as croc owners usually buy some Swiss freight cars to go with it.

Hi Tom,

Thanks for your reply! You really think the electric locomotive operating sounds are boring? I haven't heard it in person, but the videos online sound pretty cool, I think. The sound reminds me of a turbine engine.

David

Weight : Approximately 700g

Great layout ! Motors, circuit boards are all symmetrically and distributively configured in the forward and rear section with speaker & chip mounted in the central section.

The crocodile shown here is the new and short version.
Here is a site that gives a weight of 401 g for the new version:

According to a review by MEC Fulda Märklin's Ce 6/8 II is 113 g lighter than Märklin's Ce 6/8 III - they do not give an absolute weight.

With a weight of 401 g, it isn't that heavy and I don't think 2 motors are necessary to help pulling a heavier load, so Märklin has in my opinion played with 2 motors but hasn't really calculated the equal power/torque/weight ratio. on both ends more weight could have been easily added to bring it up to 500g and it looks like the middle axle is floating,

my ÖBB Rh 1089/1100 crocodiles are weighing 440g each and this is with a plastic housing.

shipping weight !!!! 699g, its all a bit confusing and it doesn't add up, if each loco weighs 401g x 2 = 802 g plus package = ???

or it is for a single loco 401g and packing weight is approx. 300g

"Shipping weight" is loco plus box plus manual plus blister.

I got my first crock in 2004 [39560] followed three years later with the brown [39562]. Then I could not miss in 2013 the double package [37565]. I do like very much the latter as it is more detailed then the first ones. Maybe 2018 will bring more as there is not such thing as too little crocodiles!
