Hi Guys,

I have a friend who is into 3D printing railway models. He has G scale PIKO stuff, but he is thinking about re-designing one of the model to scale 1.
It is a Hungarian Railways M28 diesel shunter: http://erojr.home.cern.c...rototype/M28/M28001A.JPG

As you can see in the picture, it has rod and a .... (I am not sure how it is called in English) in the middle. Obviously my friend can 3D print the entire chassis, but I would need to present the drivetrain. Would you have any suggestions how I can get something like that commercially made? I don't mean the entire drivetrain, but the wheels and maybe the rod for existing Marklin / other scale 1 suppliers?

Thanks for any advice,
Csongor

Interesting undertaking!
Finding commercially available parts shouldn't be impossible.
But as a start, it would be helpful to have a drawing of the original thing with wheels diameter, wheel base and the dimensions of the "blind shaft" in the middle, etc.
We could then look for these parts, for example in the Märklin 1 gauge or LGB spares inventory
Connecting rods could also be made in 3D printing, but I doubt you can achieve the required accuracy for a real smooth driving operation. (Typical 3D printing of 0.1 mm accuracy won't do it here!)
But these parts could easily be machine out of brass profiles.
Is the real thing a standard gauge (1435 mm) locomotive?
If yes, since G gauge is actually 1/22.5 scale there could be a disconnect here, as the 45 mm LGB track corresponds to 1000 mm narrow gauge at that scale
Are you rather talking about 1 gauge, i.e: 1/32 ?
My two cents..
looking forward to see the drawings

These are not the best images, but I hope this gives and idea:

Yes, the original model is standard gauge. And I would like a 1/32 model. We were just thinking about that, and maybe a 3 axle Maxi loco could be a suitable donor for the drive train. Like a DH360 apart from the fact that the M28 has the axles spaced (almost) equally.

I would be interested to see what you would suggest.
