You guys are a godsend for the Marklin challenged. I have 3 k87s that I acquired while buying k83s & k84s on eBay. I understand an use the k83/k84s. The k87s are idle in a box under the layout for lack of knowledge. Is there a way of using my mobile station2 to program the k87s? Do they act as a momentary contact like a k83?...permanent contact like an On/Off switch?

I don't know what a K87 is used for but I googled Marklin K87 and see that it is used for 2 rail.

4 outputs for double solenoid accessories. Designed for 2 rail though discontinued because the K83 can do both 3 rail and 2 rail so the K87 was no longer required.

It is a DCC decoder so you should be able to program with MS2. From searching google, you need to press the reset button on the K87 to enable programming.

OK, I am better informed but...Can I pump AC current into this k 87 that was designed for DC current? I am less worried about the k 87. My Mobile Station2 is another matter. I wouldn't want to mess that up.

DCC is not DC and MS2 does not provide AC.
Connecting MS2 and k87 should work fine since both are "digital".

6 decades of Lionel programmed AC into my head. I always thought of 2 rail as DC.

The k83 is MM only, the m83 announced 2013 supports both.

The k87 was discontinued many years before the m83 came. The k87 was discontinued without replacement as Märklin gave up the two-rail digital line.
Märklin "invented" MM for three-rail and DCC for two-rail. MM2 finally worked with two-rail and Märklin no longer needed to different systems.

Now it is all "digital" and two-rail and three-rail use the same decoders and the same controllers
This was different when digital started with several incompatible systems (MM, DCC, FMZ, SX, ...).

Better to ask than to fry something.
