I have had a well-used turntable (7186?) sitting in its box in my cellar for over 30 years. It was put away as is and not specially prepared for storage, i.e. not cleaned or oiled. It was really dirty and rusted in places when I took it out again the other day.
I plugged it in, pressed the buttons, and it rotated immediately and smoothly through all its positions.ThumpUp ThumpUp

Yeah, sometimes you are ever so lucky with old Marklin stuff, but not always.
Especially the older Marklin locomotives are known for electromotors getting stuck because of hardened oil, they need a proper clean-up before they run at all.

But we shouldn't forget that after a bit of cleaning and oiling the old stuff will almost always still work, showing that they are both mechanically robust and well made.

I want only up to date electronics but I love the older mechanical bits. People disparage DSM powered locos but I bought three of them in the last year without any regrets. They make modelling the inside of cabs problematic and they can be somewhat noisy but they are very strong and smooth, particularly now that they all have 5-pole motors and modern decoders.

With just a bit of care they will be operating perfectly long, long after I am gone! BigGrin

I have almost all Märklin and mostly HO, although I do have a small number of Z gauge trains!
So many trains and so little time.
