There are a lot of colourful and spectacular trains in Japan, if you do not mind multiple units. The problem for HO modellers is that Japan is a predominately a land of N gauge models, a reflection of the small size of the average house. Also what limited HO production there is has a scale of 1/80 to suit the standard Japanese gauge of 3ft 6in. (1067 mm). Bachmann did do a model of a Shinkansen series 500 set for Tenshodo a few years back in true HO but as far as I am aware it was a single run never repeated.
