I've read so many positive references to this product here that I thought I would give it a try. Especially on some rusty old M track that I have had to clean using abrasives. Trouble is that I can't find it in local stores and all online stores that stock it say that they cannot ship it internationally due to rules on shipping volatile/flammable liquids. I have just found that Hattons (UK) have dropped that shipping prohibition so I ordered a couple of bottles. The order was delivered, well packed and within the minimum estimated shipping time. Good service. Now to try it out. Jabez

But what is it made of? Is it alcohol with a little bit of something else? As per EC rules the box should tell the ingredients. |

I was able to track down (no pun intended) a Track Magic data sheet (as the UK manufacture didn't have it on their website) at Farnell as PDFAccording to that, the solvent is petroleum base naptha 95% (hydrotreated, highly flammable, volatile, and bad to breath or get on skin, but effective solvent) Added to that are: 3.5% oleoyl sarcosinic acid, which is a corrosion inhibitor, and 1.5% other additives |

I have just bought a large number of used M tracks, some with layout paint marks on the sides. Will this or any other solvent remove the paint without damaging the tracks?
Thanks

Just to clarify, I did not intend to use the Track Magic product to clean very dirty, painted, or rusty tracks, only to use it on them after they had been cleaned by other means. Jabez |

Thanks Try soapy water first, if you are lucky it might be water based paint. If it is an oil based paint I suspect this stuff, which looks like lighter fluid(?) may not be much help...but try lighter fluid anyway, cheaper and you can get it at Tescos!

Jabez If that is the case, other solutions are possibly more economical and less hazardous. The solvent cleaner that is the bulk of track magic would be wasted application if you have already cleaned the track beforehand. Finding a more economical and safer way of applying a corrosion inhibitor treatment may be better. |

Jabez That's how it is supposed to be used.. It is amazing just how quickly the tips get dirty, even on a "clean" track.. Make sure you buy extra cleaning tips. I use the ones that techs use to clean printers.. They are very cheap on eBay.. |

My mentor, Helmut Wilkness, used lighter fluid for cleaning motor parts and track. This is of course Napha which can be bought at any hardware store by the gallon for short money. I always use it when I do a conversion to clean all the motor, wheels and frame. Eric

I bought mine at a train show.
It does a good job keeping the tracks bright when not in use as well as cleaning them well after use.
I too would recommend it. |

I would assume that the solvent that constitutes the bulk of the product is primarily a diluent to insure that the corrosion inhibitor/conductivity enhance component is applied in the correct small dosage, the carrier/solvent then evaporates to leave the appropriate layer of the active component on the surface. You could hardly brush on the active component neat, so the solvent is not really 'wasted' if you had no intention of using it as a primary cleaner in the first place. Just my take on it. |
