This layout was featured in the September 1978 issue of "Model Railway Constructor" - (I think this was the first model railway magazine that I got) - It was a big layout c.10.5m X 3m, built by J. & A.J.Stevenson, depicting railways in the southern Germany. The main model was in 'HO' Scale but the layout also encompassed 'N' Scale (and even 'Z' Scale buildings) to create a forced perspective effect. I came across an old copy of this magazine and just had to share a few pictures from it (sorry about the poor quality).

The first picture, more than any other, made me want to model European railways. For me, it captured all the excitement of a big Hbf - I must have spent days lusting over it:

The mixing of scales - the Br 103 with the TEE is 'N' Scale:

Excellent, thanks for sharing.

I know people are often mixing in a bit of scales with landscape material etc. but this is the first time I ever seen it with rolling stock.

If you have the space and depth of layout I think it's a brilliant idea!

Over the years the detailing of N-scale and even Z-scale has greatly improved and I would certainly opt for N-scale as a background for H0-scale on the layout.
Please note however that N-scale (Minitrix) and Z-scale (Marklin) are operated on DC power whereas Marklin H0 is operated on AC power.
Please keep the transformers separated!

Erstaunlich means freely translated Astonishing (railroad).
