So although the three rail track used 180mm for its straight, the advent of the 3900 series pushed this up to 224mm and then it went back to 180mm for 5106 etc.?

Does this also mean that the rail production stopped in 1953? I know nothing about this bit of history but would like to learn more, I have boxes of three rail much of which seems to have blackened brass rails...

Hi Michael,

The 3900 series rails were offered from 1953 to 1956/1957. In the D57 only remaining stock was offered, not the full assortment. The 3900 rails had a completely different geometry which was not combinable with the traditional geometry. We had a longer discussion here: https://www.marklin-user...dellgleise-3900-und-3800

Regards

Markus

Markus,

Many thanks, very interesting, I have learnt something new!

As an aside I have a VB locomotive, SNCF BB9211 'Mistral' which is heavy and well built. Unfortunately DC. If the rest of their equipment was built to this standard it must have been a good range.

Michael
