Today saw the start of the first scheduled freight service from the UK to China, the journey is 7,500 miles and will take 17 days

Only suitable for small numbers, more a gimmick than anything else.
Tens of thousends of containers are moved by sea every week from Europe to China and back, impossible for railways to cater for that.
Have more than you show, speak less than you know (Shakespeare).

It should be quicker by rail than by sea. Does anyone know how long it takes a ship to do the trip?

Mostly Marklin.Selection of different eras and European railways
Small C track layout, control by MS2, 100+ trains but run 4-5 at a time.

Last time I was involved in shipping from Shanghai, we had containers delivered in UK after 25 days but they were in customs for 3 or 4 days

There were some figures quoted when the first China to UK rail shipment arrived some weeks ago. IIRC it is something like 2-3 weeks by rail, against something around 4-5 weeks by sea using normal scheduled shipping.

Ah, found it ... the first China to UK freight train arriving in the UK. Article says it took 18 days (including dropping some containers off in Germany - maybe that was a Marklin delivery Laugh ) but doesn't say what the sea journey is. You will note that the cargo was a heap of 'really useful items' ...

This article shows the first China to Europe freight train arriving in Hamburg in 2013. It also has a photo of the first block train bound for Madrid departing China in 2014.

This BBC article (different to the one linked above) says using the train cuts about 2 weeks off the travel time, but that using ships is still cheaper.
