This is a very basic question but what is meant by 1'D 1'h2 ? This was used to describe the Class 041.

1'D 1' h2 is the UIC (International Union of Railways) or German Classification of locomotive axle arrangement. In Whyte designation used in North America this would be a 2-8-2 ie. oOOOOo

1' - a single axle independent of the frame (in a bogie) in this case a front pony or pilot truck
D - four driven axles
1' - a single axle independent of the frame (in a bogie), a rear pony truck

h - Heissdampf = superheated steam
2 - two cylinders
