Joined: 16/02/2004(UTC) Posts: 15,265 Location: DE-NW		I assume this question is about Märklin and H0 gauge. There are dozens of new motors. And dozens of old motors. Torque won't be a problem. Smoothness depends on the combination of decoder and motor.

On Stummi's Forum you can find images of disassembled can motors from Märklin locos. Threads on this forum where we discussed those motors also link to those images. I remember images of five-pole can motors they used before the insolvency - motors that looked solid. I remember images of five-pole and three-pole can motors they used after the insolvency - motors that looked cheap. I cannot xray all those motors - from the outside they are all just can motors. Different sizes, different internals, different flywheel arrangements. Any motor with a permanent magnet is "high-efficiency propulsion" in Märklin speak. I was disappointed when they switched from five-pole motors to three-pole motors - and to fool people they changed the symbol in the catalogue from 5 stars to show 9 stars.. Some five-pole can motors perform well. Some three-pole can motors used by Märklin perform bad with the Märklin decoders.. Some motors are still coreless motors - but for some models the coreless motors have been downgraded to can motors.
